MAINE ITEMS j Bath Women Knit For U S S ManleyJ j Bath Me Sept 23 The women of Bath are taking great pride in knitting for the U S S Manley which leaves Bath early in October When the ship leaves here she will have on board 110 each of sweaters mufflers helmets wrist ers and twice that number of socks Many people will be interested to know that after equ ppingthe drafted men with the articles there are still remaining 46 sweaters 50 helmets 90 pairs of socks 89 pairs of wristers and 59 mufflers Even with this supply there is demand for many more More knitters are needed at once especially to make the sweaters Portland Diver Finds Ring Robert Chase of Portland deep sea diver packed up his diving suit and went down to Beauchmont Point dived into 24 feet of water and recovered a 3000 diamond ring which had been lost by Mrs Alexander Biddle of Philadelphia a couple of days ago while she was waiting on the wharf for the Rockland boat He was submerged only four minutes When the ring slipped from her finger she ac curately noted the place it hit the

A Mothers Appeal to the President Mr President those of us who are giving sons and husbands or other loved ones are giving all that we have in life Bravely we are trying to bear the sor rows which have been placed upon us Bravely we are trying to look forward with some hope of their return We would ndt hold them back for we know that they are going for our honor and to save us and all womanhood from the fearful fate which has befallen Bel gium and much of France But Mr President we know that their lives are being menaced because of pro German activities We know that many a soldiers life will be lost which might otherwise have been saved had these proGerman activities been suppressed with a ruthless hand The men who in this country are fight ing the United States by working for Germany are infinitely more our ene mies and the enemies of these loved ones that we are sending to battle than are the men in Germany even than the Kaiser and his associates These men at home are seeking to stab our loved ones in the back and you Mr

MAINE ITEMS Mothers Aid Law Goes Into Effect in Maine Augusta Me July 7 Capt James F Bagley secretary of the State Board of Charities and Corrections is sending out to the municipal boards instructions on the Mothers Aid law passed at the last session of the Legislature which be came effective today The act provides that every city and town shall help mothers with children under 14 The applicants must apply in person to the Municipal Board of Moth ers Aid and file a statement of their re sources and when medical aid is required the request shall be made to the nearest hospital receiving State aid Dependent children upon reaching 14 shall go to work for the time allowed by the school attendance laws if physically able Cash aid will be given in every case if the mother is found to be compe tent to manage cash and if she is not competent some one else will be ap pointed The municipal board will be re quired to furnish proof satisfactory to the State board that the applicant has lived in Maine for five years When an applicant moves out of a city or town it will be

ITEMS OF ALL SORTS Big Wool Cargo Safe A cargo of South African wool valued at 3500000 arrived at Boston last week and underwriters were manifestly elated when the news reached their offices The consignments were purchased for Boston importers by a score of buyers during the past six months some of the bales of scoured wool being worth at least 350 Italian Branch Banks in U S Prompted by the sending by Italy of a commercial and political commission to the United States several of Italys largest banks have decided to open branch houses in New York instead of relying upon American banks to represent them as in the past The purpose of these banks is to compete for the handling of the large war business resulting from the purchases now being made by Italy in the United States for the handling of the funds sent home by Italians and for the general tourist and trading business ex pected to come after the war May Have Deciding Power Charleston hew6 and Courier DemJ It is hard to estimate now the import ance of the weapon which has been placed in the Presidents hand in the shape of this embargo

u America and Great Britain Many people do not realize that hitherto all the active political relations between Great Britain and America have been hostile relations writes William Archer in the Westminster Gazette Twice the two Nations have been at war and there are not a few Americans who are fond of boasting that in both of these conflicts they whipped us Our normal level relations have no doubt been amicable enough but when ever the level has been broken it has been by incidents which left a certain legacy of illfeeling The general attitude of Britain during the great Civil War was anything but j sympathetic Once we were on the verge of a rupture over the case of Mason and Slidell The affair of the Alabama was exceedingly disagreeable the Venezuelan squabble led us not perhaps to the brink of hostilities but some way in that direc tion The incident of Manila Bay is perhaps the only international episode of any note that has definitely tended to draw the two Nations together Of course this does not mean that there has not been real friendship between them There has never been a moment when thousands of Englishmen and

I Letters From Tne Border Official Statements from Officers of the 2nd Maine as to Conditions at Laredo Laredo Texas July 17 1916 The Second Maine as you know left Au gusta with the men in day coaches of good type three men to a double seat which we consider was the best that could be furnished under the circum stances and great was the delight of the men and the satisfaction of the offi cers when Sunday noon at Kansas City we were furnished with tourist sleepers thus affording the men two good nights of sleep before reaching Laredo The attention of the railroad men was all that could be desired Mr Doane of the M C K R who accompanied the Regiment to the end of the trip was un tiring in his efforts and representatives of every road over which we passed ac companied to the end of their road We believe we have a great deal to thank Mr Doane for in smoothing out all the little difficulties that would have occur red At no time were we lacking for water or ice a very pleasing change from all past experiences The Regiment reached here in
