Press Comments Favor Premiers Speech Berlin Papers Underscore the Reference to Rus sia as Outstanding Feature Editorials Say Von BethmannHollweg Has Won Adherents by His Stand Ielrn 11a 1G via London May 17 Press comment today on the chan cellors speech aimoct unanimously underscores the reference to Russia a th significantly outstanding fea ture of the Premiers utterance The speech as a whole is generally com merdtd as one of the boldest and best that von BethamnnHollweg has yet made in parliament and personal criti cism of the chancellor is conspicuous ly absent The editorial discussion dilating upon all angles of var aims and peace terms emphasizes the widely divergent views entertained on all sides In many quarters the speech has had a pronounced conciliatory effect and is interpreted as pointing the way to a common meeting ground The impres sion prevails that the Conservatives came out of the fray bally battered although the chancellor was equally emphatic In disowning any predilection for the Socialist Democratic program of territorial and indemnity renuncia tion Standing guard between these two millstones the bloc of the Middle parties helped the chancellor to carry the day The chancellor has won adherents and camp followers

UosUaii But Not UN Legislature Can Decide State Reapportionmenf The men in the Legislature seem to be spending a lot of time talking and listening to talk memorializing Con gress on matters which are complete ly outside their jurisdiction and final ly politics as usual with tthe little petty squabbles and infighting the public has come to regard as the nature of the Mississippi Legislature Let us hope that if and when these gentlemen get down to work they will be consistent in their approach to the solution of the states many serious problems and it wont be another ses sion of saying Dont do as we do but do as we say do We refer specifically to their memorializing the United States Con gress to limit contributions to the United Nations and prohibit the U S from participating or buying any bonds that may be issued by the United Nations This action was said to be inspired by House Speaker Walter Sil lers and others It received a highly favorable vote in the House and over whelming approval in the Senate Tt is well and good that we stand for fair play in the United Nations and we agree

Stye IGextttgfmt Ahuerltaer Fighting Communism The John Birch Society Is Not The Answer A number of readers have asked about the John Birch Society an organization in the national limelight because of its announced intention of impeaching United Spates Supreme Court Chief Justice Earl Warren It is reported to he a semisecret society organized on a nationwide basis with the avowed purpose of fighting Communism The Blue Book of the Birch Society says it is a monolithic body which will operate under completely authoritative levels at all times It regards the present republican form of government in the United States as being inefficient in combating Communism and regards democracy in government or organization as a deceptive phrase a weapon of dema goguery and a perrennial fraud The Attorney General of the United States about ten days ago responded to questions about the society by saying he thought it more humorous than any thing else and that it probably did more harm than good In Mississippi last week the or ganization was again spotlighted when William T Clark a Jackson businessman described as head of the John Birch Society of Jackson spear headed a campaign to oust the Rev Edward H

t I THURSDAY MAY 12 I960 __ yCL NUMBER 27 Side By P D Whether Im believed or not isnt too important not really but I want to point out that I am not of the Yeah and yo big brudders one too school of journalism I know of course there are a couple of editors in the South today who have leanings in that direction in that they seem to close their eyes to the evil and wrong at their door steps and search for and stir up the dirt around the door steps of the North MidWest and West Well to heck with all that in view of the fact that this is neither an apol ogy nor a sermon Not long ago a friend of mine who lives in Colorado excited my interest by an incident which happened in the town of Canon City Colorado I report the matter as something which interested me not as an attempt to justify the dirt of which I am a part In a letter to me the friend sent a clipping from the Rocky Mountain News and it carried a threecolumn twoline head which read CANNON CITY CHURCH GIVES UP
