An American BusinessSoldier in the War Zone Part V I want to take you up to the most ad vanced station of our flying forces in France where the Lafayette Escadrille are stationed We had a wonderful day with them You read of the death of Captain Hall a few days ago It was my privilege to be shown all over their field every plane they had by Captain Hall I had a long conversation with him and he sat next to me at luncheon We had a great time with those boys Eighteen American flyers at the front represented at that date all of Americas forces at the battle front in the air Think of it We are apt to grow bombastic about our contribution to this war but so far it is woefully lacking We owe all that we have to Britain and Frai e Our part is coming in the war Here is a piece of German propaganda that is being sent around You hear it whispered now and then Well I un derstand that France is unloading onto the Americans and they are not doing their share I understand that Great Britain is not doing her

6__ MAINE ITEMS Killed Under Train The crown sheet of engine 141 hauling a freight train northbound in charge of Conductor P N Clark Engineer L F Bishop blew out when within about five miles ofVanBuren at 10 oclock Monday evening Feb 25th slightly burning En gineer Bishop and Fireman J H Corey Brakeman Harry H Tidd who was rid ing in the engine jumped off into a snow bank rolled under the train and was kill ed His home was in Island Falls where his parents reside He was unmarried They Are After the Slackers The inspectors connected with the Au tomobile Registration Bureau depart ment of State are already rounding up numerous parties who have neglected doubtless on account of the deep snow and severe weatherto register their au tos for 1918 and are using their 1917 plates and numbers The bureau officials hope it will not be necessary but will take measures to induce all such offenders to step up and settle The government will have a job to do in Lubec as a result of the big ice embargo that existed there last week When the brokenup floes were passing out through the Narrows in the

6 all sorts _A11 Ships Huns Damaged Now in U S Service Despite all the efforts made by their crews to render them useless nearly a hundred formerly interned German ships are now flying the Stars and Stripes in the service of the United States navy says the March Popular Mechanics Maga zine It develops that although the Huns were convinced their vandalism made our use of the boats impossible the navy has not only managed to repair all of them but has done the work so skill fully that in no case has failure or weak ness since developed Fire extinguishers were filled with gasoline incendiary prep arations made and gauges reversed Steam pipes were plugged by disjointing them driving in slugs of solid brass and then concealing the work by renewing the connections Meter Which Registers Telephone Calls A recently invented telephone meter described and illustrated in the March Popular Mechanics Magazine is designed to prevent errors in charging calls and t make the service more satisfactory to the subscriber in other respects Being of comparatively simple construction it can be installed in the signal case of a coinoperated telephone with slight alter ations The device comprises two
