North Waldo Pomona Grange North Waldo Pomona Grange was en tertained by Star of Progress Grange in Jackson Wednesday Sept 10th Although the sky was dark and the clouds threatening there was a goodly number present from the nearby granges and a pleasant and instructive meeting resulted Worthy Master O B Dow pre sided and the meeting was duly opened while Mr and Mrs F I Cronkhite satis factorily supplied the stations of Steward and Chaplain respectively Morning Light Sunrise Comet and Harvest Home Granges were represented besides the host grange During the business session a commu nication was read from the Lecturer of Waldo Pomona extending an invitation to tile members to meet with that Pomona at Frederick Ritchie Grange hall in Waldo Tuesday Sept 23rd The invitation was unanimously accepted At this time Mr and Mrs Sidney Tibbetts were introduced and received the instructions of the de gree of Pomona B WFarniiam of Comet Grange presided at the piano during the ceremony after which a delicious dinner was served by ladies of Star of Progress Grange and an enjoyable social hour fol lowed Grange was reassembled in the fifth de gree and the choir rendered a pleasing selection

WALDO DISTRICT LODGE IOG T A most interesting and profitable session of the Waldo District Lodge was held with Belfast Lodge No 30 Saturday June 17th The meeting was called to order at 11 a m by District Chief Templar Tolman H Fernald and the following officers responded to the roll District Vice Templar Mabel Rose District Secretary Elizabeth L Brackett District Superintendent J T Ella Pillsbury District Sentinel I W Cottrell The appointments for vacancies were as follows District Counselor E R Knowlton District Treasurer Emma I Huxford Chap lain Lora Maxcy Past District Chief T M J Dow Marshal I W Cottrell Deputy Marshal Minnie L Knowlton Guard Lewis Godding The degree was conferred upon eight condidates During the noon recess dinner was served by the local lodge in the con venient dining room adjoining the hall The afternoon session convened at l oclock when the reports of officers and committees were received The state of the order in the county was given by the secretary as materially unchanged but that new interest was being manifested in some localities The address ot the District Chief Tem plar was able and exhaustive and by unanimous vote was ordered to

UP IN MAINE SAYINGS AND DOINGS IN THE PINE TREE STATE WIALM IN AN ALDER SWAM A Waldo county man sends the Ban go r News a story about a neighbor of his who is making money from an al der swamp which has an area of no more than ten acres The land was low and mucky and very wet Except for large crops of mosquitoes the prod ucts of this piece had been hardly worth recording The purchaser paid two dollars an acre for the lot or 20 in all and at once took possession by fitting up and moving into an aban doned farm house which stood on a knoll at one corner of the swamp the only dry piece of land in the pur chase He proceeded to map oft his tract in true forestry style planning to cut one acre every year and to proceed in that ratio until at the end of ten years he should come back to his origi nal lot In this manner he has kept at work cutting his alders in June and trimming out and peeling the larger and crooked sticks to be made into rus tic furniture during

MORE WALDO COUNTY HORSES The Pearl Brook Farm String From Turf Farm and Home Last week we noticed some of the horses at Pearl Brook farm owned by Mr M B Smith of Hartford Conn but were not able to mention them all The string is headed by the well known stallion Marston C 219 three years old by Piedmont 219 dam Maiden 223 by Electioneer weighs 1250 lbs stands 10 hands and can brush a two minute gait This is a great horse and is getting some very high class colts They also have in the stud the elegant stallion Directum Poster by Directum dam by Gen Washington This colt is only three years old stands 153 and weighs 1085 lbs can step fast on the trot and is a desirable horse to breed to A very handsome colt on this farm is the three year old thoroughbred stal lion Handunder by the great sire Hindoo sire of Handspring etc This colt is a golden chestnut stands 15 2 12 and weighs 1000 lbs has a trial mile in 141 and is as clean and racy looking as a greyhound Mr Smith uses him as a pacemaker and will

PEIRCE BROS OF FRANKFORT Thousands of Tons of Granite Quarried from Mt Waldo The supply Inexhaustible Boston Sunday Globe 111 the directorate of the recently or ganized Panama construction company appear the names of John Peirce of New York and George Peirce of Frank fort Me Incase the contract is awarded to Oliver the Peirces will be identified with the heaviest of the subcontractors Their specialty will be the granite stone and construction work There are more Peirces down in Maine Hayward and Albert Peirce making four brothers iu all who have been almost literally brought up on granite representing a business started over half a century ago by their father the late George A Peirce but carefully improved enlarged and nour ished until the Peirce quarries are among the largest and most important iu the country While the Frankfort quarries are operated under several different names and corporate titles the great majority of the stock is all in the family John Peirce of New York who has attained fame as a contractor is the real selling agent of the Peirce granite and paving while George Peirce Hayward Peirce andAlbert Peirce see that the goods are delivered In 1853 while

Maines Vital Statistics 16003 Children Born in 1905 i6f Twin Births and One Triple Birth Three Men and One Woman Martied the Filth Time lr A G Young registrar of vital statistics tuts submitted bis last annual report that tor 1905 The number of children born in the State in 1905 was 10005 of which 15294 were living and 11 stillbirths Of the living children of which the sex was certified 7794 were males and 7483 females For each 100 girls born there were 1041 boys The birth rate in the cities per 1000 population was 2058 as compared with 2182 the birth rate of the rest of the State As it has invariably been since regis tration beguu in the State the birth rate was the highest in Aroostook county 3400 and the lowest in Waldo 1452 Of the total births 0008 per cent were of native parents 2079 of foreign parentage and 1799 of parents one of whom was foreign Lincoln county had the largest percentage of nativeborn parents 9101 per cent and only 058 percent in which both parents were foreign born High percentages of foreign horn parents were found in Androscoggin county 3960 and in York

third District Republicans Henominate Congressman Edwin C Bur leigh by Acclamatien Nomination Speeches Applauded Orlando E Prost of Belfast Stirs the Convention to Cheers The Republican convention of the 3d Maine Congressional district was held at City Hall Waterville April 29th and an enthusiastic and loyal gathering of workers from Kennebec Somerset Hancock and Waldo counties met there in force to enter upon the work of the 190 campaign The convention was marked by absolute harmony and its business was disposed of in business like fashion The convention was called to order at 11 a m by J W Black of Searsport chairman of the district com mittee and after prayer by Rev George Dana Saunders of Waterville the call for the convention as read by Hon W II Wildes of Skowhegan Hon Ellery Bowden of Winterport was elected tem porary chairman and after taking the chair made an able address in which among other things lie said The Republican party during most of the past half century lias enacted the laws which have shaped and mould ed the destinies of this country The periods since 1S61 when the Democratic party was in control were illustrious principally for laws which

The First Maine Cavalry A Regiment With a Fighting Record The annual reunion of Co D First Maine Cavalry Veteran Association was overlooked at the time it was held in Ellsworth but it is worth recalling now in connection with the history of this famous regiment The only representa tive present for Waldo county was Abner K Gray of Prospect The meeting was held in Grand Army hail which was dec orated for the occasion with flags and cards bearing the names of 108 battles and engagements which Co D had the proud distinction of being in The First Maine Cavalry saw more fighting than any other cavalry regiment in the service The regiment was organized in the fall of 1861 It was a State regiment the com panies being appointed among the differ ent counties the larger counties being al lowed a company each while of the smaller counties two were allowed a com pany Company D was raised in Wash ington and Hancock counties The reg iment went into camp at Augusta where it spent the long severe winter of 18612 living in Sibley tents banked with snow and heated only by a little stove hung on a

NEWS OF THE WEEK Maine Matters Lawrence Bros of South Gardiner have sold to Boston par ties Crocker township for 110000 It contains 20000 acres and is said to be one of the best spruce tracts in Maiue today It is particularly well situated being bandy to either water or railroad Law rence Bros bought this tract of land three years ago for 40000 and have therefore netted a profit of 70000 and their original investment has paid them a dividend of over 50 per cent each year Lightning struck and wrecked the roof of Charles J Treworgys lumber mill at Ellsworth Falls June 14 The 15 men in the building were shocked by the electricity three men being unconscious for some hours The lire which followed the bolt was extinguished before much damage was doneThe Congregational clergy men of Hancock county in conference at Bluehill June 14th adopted resolutions condemning the flagrant violation of the marriage contract and the deplorable in crease of divorces iu the State The adoption of the resolution carried with it the agreement that clergymen of the conference should not solemnize marriage where one has or both parties have been divorced_Samuel Bryant a prominent citizen
