The First Maine Cavalry A Regiment With a Fighting Record The annual reunion of Co D First Maine Cavalry Veteran Association was overlooked at the time it was held in Ellsworth but it is worth recalling now in connection with the history of this famous regiment The only representa tive present for Waldo county was Abner K Gray of Prospect The meeting was held in Grand Army hail which was dec orated for the occasion with flags and cards bearing the names of 108 battles and engagements which Co D had the proud distinction of being in The First Maine Cavalry saw more fighting than any other cavalry regiment in the service The regiment was organized in the fall of 1861 It was a State regiment the com panies being appointed among the differ ent counties the larger counties being al lowed a company each while of the smaller counties two were allowed a com pany Company D was raised in Wash ington and Hancock counties The reg iment went into camp at Augusta where it spent the long severe winter of 18612 living in Sibley tents banked with snow and heated only by a little stove hung on a
