UP IN MAINE SAYINGS AND DOINGS IN THE PINE TREE STATE WIALM IN AN ALDER SWAM A Waldo county man sends the Ban go r News a story about a neighbor of his who is making money from an al der swamp which has an area of no more than ten acres The land was low and mucky and very wet Except for large crops of mosquitoes the prod ucts of this piece had been hardly worth recording The purchaser paid two dollars an acre for the lot or 20 in all and at once took possession by fitting up and moving into an aban doned farm house which stood on a knoll at one corner of the swamp the only dry piece of land in the pur chase He proceeded to map oft his tract in true forestry style planning to cut one acre every year and to proceed in that ratio until at the end of ten years he should come back to his origi nal lot In this manner he has kept at work cutting his alders in June and trimming out and peeling the larger and crooked sticks to be made into rus tic furniture during
