The Increased Cost of Living One of the most interesting problems of to day is tlie rise in the cost of liv ing Itaffects everybody and accord ingly there is no one for whom it has not a keen interest While the poor suffer most owing to the great increase m the prices of bare necessaries the rich are likewise made uncomfortable Mr Midas for example does not enjoy paying 50 per cent more for a diamond necklace than the jeweler would have asked for the same article four or five years ago To most people the situa tion signifies in effect a considerable reduction of income and the individual who feels it most perhaps is the sal aried man whose wages remain un changed while their purchasing power is seriously diminished Young Mr lienedick let ns say has just taken the adventurous leap into matrimony He earns only a moderate satorv hut enough as he and his little wTTe have figured it out to maintain a comfortable home on a modest scale Having saved a few hundred dollars sufficient to build a house with a view to the eventual acquisition of full own ership in the propertyon the instal

lift PRODICTION OF MAPLE SUGAR The Bureau of Forestry Seeks to Develop and Extend the Industry The Bureau of Forestry has been studying the maple sugar industry with the view of securing a larger use of the maple forests Since 1S50 the area oi maple sugar farming has greatly chang ed and shrunk In early days maple sugar was commonly made even in many parts of the South because cane sugar was virtually unobtainable No longer is there even a limited produc tion in South Carolina Georgia Alaba ma Mississippi Louisiana and Arkan sas This is because cane gugar can now be bought everywhere at a low price and is preferred to maple sugar for sweetening In Indiana Michigan and Illinois the maple trees have been extensively cut for lumber thus reduc ing the opportunity for tree tapping In those States also the markets are glutted with imitations which removes the incentive to extending the industry In other States as in western Mary land West Virginia Ohio New York and in New England the maple sugar industry has held its own or been in creased The best sap How is secured in the cooler northern States yet good results can

Naval Strength of Argentina It is Absurdly Overrated The National Navy Yard Interesting Items Concern ing our Distant Sister Republic Special Correspondence of Tlie Journal Tigre Argentina July 1 1905 This queer little town where is the national navy yard of Argentina is about twenty miles from Buenos Ayres at the confluence of two riversthe Parana and Lujan Several torpedo boats and other small craft that make up the navy of the republic are always to be seen off shore It is diflicult to imagine how these boats could be of any use in case of emergency because the water is so shallowin many places barely two feet deep though fairly rough and with a very rapid current that no vessel with much draft could possibly be gotten out without a very slow and tedious trip up this branch of the Parana river to distant San Pedro and then down again by one of the main branches We are given to under stand however that the torpedo boats are maintained chiefly for the overaw ing of the neighboring republics and are expected to furnish more employ ment to painters than to gunners They are rarely ever in practice hut are

RECOGNITION DAY AT CHAUTAUQUA Correspondence of The Journal Chautauqua X Y Aug 21 Wed nesday morning August 16th about one hundred and seventyfive members of the large class of 1905 of the Chau tauqua Literary and Scientific Circle passed through the Golden Gate and received their diplomas in token of the completed course Recognition Day is the crowning event of the Chautauqua year the natural climax of the As sembly program and the goal toward which thousands of men and women in all parts of the globe strive zealously throughout the years The Cosmopo litan class well named because of the widely different communities represent ed in its membership and the broad in terest which its members have mani fested in all the work of the Circle re ceived formal recognition for the fidel ity with which its members have pur sued to completion the four years course of home reading prescribed by the Circle With the one hundred and seventyfive of this class who were present to go through the mystic portal were a large number of graduates of former years but who had never be fore been at Chautauqua on Recogni tion Day All over the world however

EARLY DAYSJN JACKSON REMINISCENCES OF AN OLD SETTLER Thinking that stories of old times as told by our older people would he of in terest to our readers we several weeks ago wrote to a number of old men in this and surrounding towns asking them to call on us when in 1J rooks This week we had the pleasure of meeting and conversing with one of these venerable men in the person of Uncle Jewell Piper of Jackson who cailed at our office in response to our letter He said he would have called before this had he not been so busy for after harvesting his own large crop of hay lie had been working by the day haying lor others and didnt want to quit until everybody had got quite through After getting well seated and ins pipe lighted Uncle Jewell said he was ready to talk A few leading questions got him under way and for about two hours we sat and listened to the stories and happenings of the earlier days as they fell from the lips ot this citizen of Jackson Uncle Jewell says he was born in Jackson December 111808 and therefore will be

Crossing the Andes in 1905 fey Winding Trails Near Their Southern End Special Correspondence of Tile Journal Mendoza Argentina October 15 1005 in this part of South America as farther north the Andean system comprises three distiuct chains the en tire mountain belt having an average width of 250 miles The easternmost Cordillera is known as the laramillos and the westernmost as the Combre The central cordillera is the highest continuous section of the Andean wall from Panama to Patagonia there be ing only two gaps between Aconcagua and Maypua distance of 100 miles where the crest falls below 19000 feet and both Aconcagua and Tupungato exceed 22000 feet Having climbed the Paramillos range we found ourselves on the summit about two oclock one afternoon at a height of 9000 feet above the sea and about 7000 above Mendoza It was bitterly cold even here the ground covered with snow and a tremendous wind sweeping over the crest but the scenery which had increased in graudeurevery hour re paid a thousand fold the toil of the ascent Mendoza appeared to lie directly at our feet so near that we could count its white houses and trace the shaded streets and

MONTREAL AND QUEBEC Impressions of These Canadian Cities by an American Tourist Leaving Belfast on the 120 p m train Sept 27th we arrived in Portland at 635 and after a short stop there took a sleep er for Montreal over the White Mountain Division Well now a sleeper is all right but it proved to be a waker for me and I had a good chance to study the sky all night as I laid beside a window In the mean time others were sleeping 1 could tell this by a peculiar sound coming from some of the berths near me We were sidetracked at St Johnsbury Vt for a while waiting for the through train from Boston to Mont real We had been riding head towards the engine but after we were coupled on to the Boston train and started 1 said to my wife good Lord they are taking us to Moutreal feet first and so it was Well we were up and dressed early and had a good view of the country as we went speed ing along toward our destination We noticed that it was good farming land and very level for miles before we

GRANDJANYON A Womans Impressions and Description ot that Natural Wonder Correspondence of The Journal Fort Apache Arizona October The next morning after a shower I saw a most wonderful effect produced as the mist rose and formed in little cloudlets drifting and wandering in and out among the turrets and pinnacles uch as though it possessed a will of its wn and on some errand intent Many were tlie cameras in evidence attempt ng to catch some small portion of the inusual sight A drive of two and a half miles along the rim took us to Rowes Point where the most advantageous view can lie obtained It is a huge peninsula utting out a half mile into the canyon md some places but a few feet beyond the carriage wheels at each side was a sheer declivity which made a cold chill run up my spine as I anxiously watched every movement of the well trained horses From this point one has an minterrupted view of 70 miles up and iown the canyon Lying below at the i ight was the battleship Iowa a stone formation of striking resemblance Then there is Vishmes Temple Senti lel Point Point Havi

THE VOLUNTEER NAVY A Foolhardy Expedition Inspired by Act ing Master Smith who was not in it Smith Makes his Exit from the Service IX In my last l stated that we had re turned to our old cruising ground off Matagorda Texas where things for a time resumed their old phases with a few exceptions Alter witnessing the brilliant exploits on the Mississippi Acting Master Smith of whom I have previously spoken became more and more convinced that he was it and finally arrived at the conclusion that he could put down the remainder of the Rebellion all bv himself He appeared to liken himself to Alexander the Great and to be looking for worlds to con quer On the other hand we likened him to Don Quixote a man who would charge a windmill hut Smith did not seem to he able to get a Sancho Rauza to iollow him He was more frantic to do something to distinguish himself than ever before and at last thought he had the opportunity And by rea son of this the executive officer Mr Dean and myself and thirtytwo men came very near being captured and the chances of being killed

NOTES FROM FLORIDA A Good Catch of Bluefish The Razorback Hog Orange Groves Moving South The Season Nearing its Close Correspondence of The Journal Palm Black Florida March 19 1906 A few days ago 1 went fishing with some friends Mr Leroy IIiscock anti his father who own the trim little launch Helen and as it was my first fishing trip in Florida you may he assured that the fact 1 came out high line was most gratifying 1 was awak1 ened from slumbers by my friends in 1 the early morning hours and crawlii g out of bed pulled on my clothes anil was soon breakfasting with them Af ter such a breakfast as befits a good fisherman we left on the little boat for a trip up the lake mid were soon on the fishing grounds The catching of blue fish here is considered a great sport and we landed a good catch We used a bright piece of lead with a bit of red flannel and while the hook was larger j than a mackerel jig it was on similar lines The fish bit readily and as we did all the fishing by trolling we bad to
