JOINT BANQUET Associated Press and Pub lishers Dine Together Every Slate end Territory In the Union Represented Senator Knox and William J Bryan Among the Guests New York April 22There was a notable gathering of editors and pub lishers at the WaldorfAstoria tonight the occasion be og a joint banquet of The Associated Press and the Ameri can Newspaper Publishers Associa tion both of which organizations are holding their annual meetings in this city Every state and territory of the United States was represented by per sons who have earned distinction in the newspaper profession while their guests included William Jennings Bry an United States Senator Philander C Knox of Pennsylvania and others of public influence The grand hall room was filled to the limit of comfort when the 600 diners had found their places The boxes which were half hidden by a wealth of carnations and apple blossoms were occupied by the families and friends of the banquetters The scheme of deco rations was as beautiful as it was elab orate the national colors of course predominating At the presidents table were Gener al Charles H Taylor of the Boston Globe the toastmaster Herman Rid der editor and publisher

STATE NEWS HANCOCK m SARGENTVILLE The fair held by the Library Associ ation was a decided success netting 235 The school committee have been re pairing and painting the schoolhousc School began Sept 2 taught by Miss Gleason of Cherryfleld The Eastern Steamship Co is repair ing the wharf at this place Mrs Mc Auley wife of the superintendent who has been stopping here with her hus band has returned to her home in Camden Ernest Grindle who has been living on what is known as the John Katon place is moving into Mrs Mary Wares house Merton Page has moved from North Sedgwick into J W Grindies house Several Sargentville people attended the fair at Bangor Friday William K Ialor has been entertain ing his father and two sisters at his summer cottage Raymond Bridges has purchased a house lot of W X Means at Curriers Corner and is preparing to build a house Edward Skelton of West Brooksville was the guest of Clarence Chatto Sat urday and Sunday Harold Sargent is passing a few days with his mother before entering the University of Maine The Dluesedgbrook S S Association will hold its annual session at Sedg wick Sept

Dropsy Neuralgia of the Heart For Years Pain Went From Heart to Head Dr Heart Cure and Nervine Cured About three years ago my sister was so badly sheeted with heart trouble and neu ralgia of the heart that we did not expect her to live Although we had a firstclass phy sician shegrew worse under this treatment She had a swollen dropsical look and had frequent spells of neuralgia plain at her heart when she Wedld tender the most heartrend ing moans and shrieks At times the pain would go from her heart to her head when a lump would appear on her temple half as large as an egg One night she got up in bed and ran into the back yard crying with pain she was not conscious of it however and was brought back to the house by neigh bors I bought for her a bottle each of Dr MilesNervine and Heart Cure which helped her greatly She afterward used some five or six bottles and has never had a spell since I had used your medicine with great benefit myself I know that Nervine and Heart Cure not only saved my sisters life but also

funny things How Newspaper Humor Has Grown and Changed The Short Joke is a Product of Recent Years JVlany Good Samples of Wit and Humor in Past and Present In the file room of The Baltimore American are the bound volumes of the paper dating back to 1773 writes W IX Nesbit Josh Wink in the Inde pendent Here the person who feels an interest in the study of the growth and development of newspaper humor In America may spend some musty dusty tjlIt doubtless enlightening hours Con sidered in the light of present day wit there was no newspaper humor a cen tury ago If we will but remember the mental attitude ot the strictly moraled people of those days we shall recall the fact that at that time any mani festation of humor was regarded as in tensely unregenerate if not wholly wicked w see in the historical novel of today much of the sprightly wit and brilliant conversation of the old colonial regime but it was not re flected in the papers of that time To get any newspaper humor to speak of tve mu t on down to about 50 years ago lien it began to

JUST A GLIMPSE Of the Early Editorial Writers of Kennebec Valley Storng Characters That Left a Deep Impress Upon Those Who Came Within the Sphere of Their Pow erful Influence Head before the Kennebec Historical Society To give this subject the range ami fulness of detail that it merits would be to furnish material for a good sized volume I shall therefore undertake at this time merely to touch briefly upon the more salient characteristics of a small group of men whose names are prominently identified with the earlier newspaper history of Central Maine and who exerted a power for progress that will extend far beyond the narrow limits of their own day and generation I shall also consider only the work of those writers who attained distinction in the newspaper work of the Kennebec valley prior to the Civil war and shall not undertake to pre serve any chronological order In the very nature of things the best work of the editorial writer is largely of an impersonal character and he so frequently sees the children of his brain adopted and reared as the natural off spring of others that the experience has nothing of novelty for him It
