Literary News and Notes In their November issue the editors of Modules have more than justified the recent raise in the price of the magazine The articles are varied and vital and there is a new note of dis tinction in the fiction George Keu uaus article on criminal government should arouse the public conscience It tells of conditions which every citi zen of this democracy should know a gang of criminals in municipal con trol fostered vice as a moneymaking scheme debauching the social and business life of a great city beginning with prominent ard respectable citi zens from whom bribes were exacted and ending with the street children who dropptd a penny in the slot and saw indescribable vicious pictures li censed by the robber government The gifted Kate Douglass Wiggin in The Old Peabody Pew which she has just written has shown an understand ing of the hearts of honest countrybred God fearing folk It is a love story with a happy ending in which the auth or pictures life iu a New England ham let where plain living high thinking and the gossiping habit struggle for su premacy No story will more quickly turn the reader

Literary News and Notes Holman Day the well known Maine author is getting out a new book en tilled King Spruce which is to be published by Harper Bros The story w liich is appearing serially in the New England Magazine is a most interest ing one and deals with life and doings in the Maine wools and in the opinion of the writer is the best sustained and the highest iu literary quality of any of Mr Days novels The December issue of the Atlantic is a peculiarly interesting magazine There are seven important articles each very brilliant of its kind The leader is entitled The Future of our Navigable Waters and is written by John L Mathews who has been mak iug a special study of the subject An Art Museum for the People by Frank Jewett Mather treats of the best practical arrangement of exhibi tions for public use Agnes Deans Cameron writes on Wheat the Wiz ard of the North a striking article telling of the enormous immigration to the newly utilized fields of western Canada There is abundant fiction of the usual high Atlantic standard and the poetry is of a strictly Christmas character One
