Covers the Isthmus of Panama from Panama City and Chorera on the Pacific Coast to Chagres and Portobelo Harbor on the Caribbean Coast. Also shows rivers, streams, settlements, an existing rail line, a proposed rail line to Panama City, a proposed canal, roads, a trail, coastline, coastal features, and anchorages. Title written in ink from verso. Pencil, pen-and-ink and wash. On verso at top in script and black ink: To: J.B. Feraud, esq. On verso in ink in bottom right corner: No.17 Coll. of Major DB Douglass, abt. 1838. Outline map of the eastern United states including Cuba and the Gulf of Mexico. Shows the railroad network and steamship routes. Indicates the railroad land grant and the coal and iron deposits in Alabama. Distances from Washington, D.C., to New Orleans, La. are shown below the title. Chartered in 1853 and 1854. Consolidated with the Wills Valley Railroad, forming the Alabama and Chattanooga Railroad.
Map of the eastern United States showing drainage, cities and towns, distance by 100-mile concentric circles centered on Roanoke, and the railroad network with emphasis on the main line. This line became one of the world's greatest coal carriers. It began as the City Point Rail Road from Petersburg to City Point, a distance of 9 miles. It was consolidated in 1870 as the Atlantic, Mississippi, and Ohio Railroad. See entry 491. It was sold in 1881 under the above name. In 1896 it was reorganized as the Norfolk and Western Railway Company.

Detailed map of the north-central states showing drainage, cities and towns, township and county boundaries, and the railroads with names and emphasis on the main line. Incorporated in 1863 as the Milwaukee and St. Paul Railway. See items 464 and 465. In 1874 the word Chicago was added to the name. LC has a Rand McNally and Company map, measuring 35 x 45 cm., which uses the new name for the first time.
