THE VETERANS POLL TAX In the Maine House Feb 7th on motion of Mr Skidmore of Liberty an act to amend Chapter 163 Public Laws ot 1905 relating to the exemption of soldiers and sailors from poll tax was taken from the table Mr Skidmore then addressed the House rs follows Mr Speaker in tabling this bill my purpose was to call the attention of the members of the House to the fact that this bill was treading ou dangerous ground that it created a class legisla tion that is it relieved from taxation a certain portion of onr people who were well able to pay The law relat ing to a poll tax by some is considered to be absurd and wholly wrong but as for me I do not think so It gives to those w ho are young and just coming on the held of action and who have not had the privilege that others have had to acquire property ou which to be taxed a better and more thorough knowledge of the plan and conditions of government Now there is a law on the statute books which this law calls attention to which exempted all soldiers

Maines herbalist Abandoned Farm Made to Pay Good Money You Can Smell His Catnip Crop Half a Mile Away Boston Sunday Globe The story of how William K Burgess of East Bucksport has managed one of Maines famous abandoned farms aud won prosperity and considerable fame from land that was cluttered with loose stones and iufested with pernic ious weeds deserves to be elevated into a treatise on agricultural economics and a place in the libraries of agricultural colleges Less than 20 years ago when Mr Burgess went to East Bucksport from a farm in Monroe Me he was rich in health and hope though poor in finan cial resources so when he had bought two adjoining tarms on the shores of Long pondboth of which had been cropped clear down to hard pan and undergone the process which Maine farmers term skinning until there was nothing left to skinhe found himself at 35 years of age without an available dollar in the world and hitch ed to a barren hillside farm which according to local report was not able to sustain a pair of rabbits The first thing which Mr Burgess needed was ready money Local ways of securing

PEIRCE BROS OF FRANKFORT Thousands of Tons of Granite Quarried from Mt Waldo The supply Inexhaustible Boston Sunday Globe 111 the directorate of the recently or ganized Panama construction company appear the names of John Peirce of New York and George Peirce of Frank fort Me Incase the contract is awarded to Oliver the Peirces will be identified with the heaviest of the subcontractors Their specialty will be the granite stone and construction work There are more Peirces down in Maine Hayward and Albert Peirce making four brothers iu all who have been almost literally brought up on granite representing a business started over half a century ago by their father the late George A Peirce but carefully improved enlarged and nour ished until the Peirce quarries are among the largest and most important iu the country While the Frankfort quarries are operated under several different names and corporate titles the great majority of the stock is all in the family John Peirce of New York who has attained fame as a contractor is the real selling agent of the Peirce granite and paving while George Peirce Hayward Peirce andAlbert Peirce see that the goods are delivered In 1853 while

PENOBSCOT PARK A BANGOR AROOSTOOK SUMMER RESORT The newest excursionist resort in all Maine is Penobscot Park in Stockton tiarbor Nature was wonderfully lavish with her charms and attractions when ahe fashioned the country round about Stockton harbor but it remained for the pushing of the Bangor Aroostook railroad down into that territory to the very waters edge to put all these nat ural delights within easy reach of ex cursionists Last year hundreds of parties great and small visited Stock ton harbor and declared that their out ing was one of the most instructive and enjoyable trips they had ever takeD This year the excursion facilities of the place will be added to considerably and it is safe to say that no other resort in Maine will offer a more genuine good time to its visitors than will Penobscot Park Stockton Harbor Stockton Harbor 33 miles by rail from Bangor is the seaport terminal of the Bangor Aroostook railroad Hera are truly gigantic wharves At Cape Jellison the alongshore dock measures 1750 feet with two others measuring 1600 by 200 and 1100 by SO feet giving a total waterfront wharfage of about 7000 feet Here too is the largest

Mrs blooms Evanescent bonnet Miss La Fields millineryshop stood a little back frpm the main street in Dorset It held itself aloof as it were from the tinsmiths on one side and the Vienna bakery on the other both of which stood vulgarly close to the walk and to the curious eyes of the passers by But this only lent additional charm a certain mystery to the trim shop be tween them with its gay bonnets look ing demurely from the windows There was a certain delicious French iness about the place that went to the heart of every Dorset womanfrom the La before the little milliners name to the inimitable twist she could give a bow the spirit of France breathed forth As Mrs Bloom said Its like hevin a foreign native livin right long with us But truth must out There was nothing French about Miss La Field in fact it was well known that her father came from a small island west oi England whose inhabitants do not love the English and her mothers maiden name was OConnor the apos trophe being added when she came to the shtates How the La came was no mystery It

Maines Vital Statistics 16003 Children Born in 1905 i6f Twin Births and One Triple Birth Three Men and One Woman Martied the Filth Time lr A G Young registrar of vital statistics tuts submitted bis last annual report that tor 1905 The number of children born in the State in 1905 was 10005 of which 15294 were living and 11 stillbirths Of the living children of which the sex was certified 7794 were males and 7483 females For each 100 girls born there were 1041 boys The birth rate in the cities per 1000 population was 2058 as compared with 2182 the birth rate of the rest of the State As it has invariably been since regis tration beguu in the State the birth rate was the highest in Aroostook county 3400 and the lowest in Waldo 1452 Of the total births 0008 per cent were of native parents 2079 of foreign parentage and 1799 of parents one of whom was foreign Lincoln county had the largest percentage of nativeborn parents 9101 per cent and only 058 percent in which both parents were foreign born High percentages of foreign horn parents were found in Androscoggin county 3960 and in York

FAR WEST FARMER Bruce 6 Eaton and Bis Farm of 23000 Acres A visitor from the west came to Springfield the other day and has gout away with the impression that the Con neticut valley is the prettiest place that he has ever seen This man was Bruce G Eaton theownerof a little farm in Colorado near the town ol Greeley which is in the center of one of the richest farming sections of the state and thanks to irrigation one ol the best of the country Mr Eatons little farm comprises at present 23000 acres of which 1300 are under cultivation and Mr Eaton is making preparations to till about 500C more the coming year Mr Eaton is the son of one of the pioneers of that section who crossed the plains in 1850 Mr Eaton was married about 1C years ago his wife being a native ol Colorado bat also a graduate of Mt Holyoke college so that they have a tie with the east The town in which they live is Greeley named after Hor ace Greeley and it is a beautiful town about 52 miles north of Denver The homestead was but the begin ning of

AT VALLEY EORGE Dedication of Memorial Tablet to Maine Soldiers Valley Forge Pa Oct 17 In i the presence of a large assemblage of men prominent in Maine and Pennsyl t vania a monument to the memories of soldiers from the State of Maine who were at Valley Forge in the winter of 17771778 wasunveiled this afternoon at the historic camp George E Fellows president of the Maine Society of the Sons of the American Revolution presided at the exercises Governor Cobb of Maine presented the monument to the Valley Forge Park commission and it was accepted by W H Sayen a member of the com mission Gov Cobb spoke as follows Mr President Ladies and Gentlemen The whole country owes a debt of gratitude to the men and women who justly proud of their ancestry have done so much to perpetuate the deeds and memories of those who participat ed in the struggle for independence and constitutional liberty in America A definite motive inspired the great commonwealth upon whose soil we stand today and whose guests in a sense we are to set aside to care for and to consecrate forever to a reverent patriotism this hallowed and historic

NATION MAY BE DRY Hovember Elections Help to Swell the Roll of Prohibition States The temperance people who are light ing the saloon and the saloon influ ences in politics have reason to feel elated over the result of the November elections Democrats and Republicans lost and won but the returns show a steady gain for the cause of prohibition Following is a statement of actual con ditions in all the States up to date as compiled and issued by the Chicago RecordHerald AlabamaFortyone counties have voted to stop the sale of liquor entirely and the same result is said to be cer tain in nine others where arrange ments have been made for elections These nine include Montgomery the third largest in the State This will make titty out of sixtyseven against whiskey Four of the seventeen left have dispensaries that cannot be dis turbed for two years yet It is well established that the incoming legisla ture will make all the State prohibition ArkansasFivesevenths of the pop ulation live in dry territory License majority of 52000 in 1894 has changed to an aggregate majority of 10000 for prohibition in 1900 CaliforniaFour dry counties and much dry territory in
