NEWS OF THE WEEK Maine Mattehs Forest Commis sioner Edgar E Ring is now engaged in making official visits to tlie wild land i counties of the State for the purpose of making arrangements with suitable persons to act as tire wardens under the j provisions of the new law passed by the legislature the past winter This law provides that he shall thoroughly police the timber lands in tbe unorganiztd townships of the State so as to protect them from tires Wardens will he eu1 gaged at S2 per day for such time as they may he actually employed and as sistants may be summoned at any time who shall be paid 15 cents an hour tori the service renderedThe State lays j claim to the oldest twins living in New England and probably in tlie l nited States The Maine twins are Calebs j Haskell one of the most prominent I citizens of New Gloucester and Mis 1 Judith P Bradbury who is now living j in Box bury Mass They were born in j New Gloucester August 1 1M4 iheir parents Caleb and Judith Collins lias1 keli had twelve children of whom ten I grew to maturity
CONCERNING CALIFORNIA OBSERVATIONS AFTER FIFTY YEARS RESIDENCE IN THE GOLDEN STATE To the Editor of The Journal Your reporter wished me to give him an interview as a representative from California I am very sorry that my time is so limited I cannot do so but I have been so warmly received by the old friends of fifty years ago and their descendants that I cannot refrain from sending you this communication hop ing it may be of some interest to your numerous readers California has an extent of nearly ten degrees from north to south and as it extends from N W to S E its length is about SOO miles with an average width of 225 miles Its productions climate and scenery are more varied than on the Atlantic side of the continent You will notice in the very heart of this great State the Sacramento Valley drained by the Sac ramento river from the north and the San Joaquin river from the south This valley is more than 400 miles long and fifty miles wide and comprises 12SOO OOP acres It is enclosed on the north by the Siskiyou mountains on the east by the Sierra Nevada
