FERGUS COUNTY DEMOCRAT Subscriptionper Year2SO TOM STOUT Proprietor Published Weekly LEWISTOWN MONT November 28 PAST AND PRESENT About 23 years ago an awkward looking young chap started a news paper in the town of Maiden at that time in Meagher county He sent the paper to about every resident of this part of the state at any rate to every resident of Maiden and vicinity al though very few of them had sub scribed When some of them a year or two later mildly objected to pay ing for something they had not order ed the young man became very indig nant That young man of those days has become a rather patriarchal old gentleman with a very forgetful mem ory In those days with no opposition he spent many a tearful night and w r ailed his discouragement from one end of Maiden to the other and only the material assistance of numerous big hearted men of the camp prevent ed him from turning his face toward eastern relatives One lucky day for him he tossed a penny in the air to determine which his paper should be democratic or republican in politics and it landed tails up That

MONTREAL AND QUEBEC Impressions of These Canadian Cities by an American Tourist Leaving Belfast on the 120 p m train Sept 27th we arrived in Portland at 635 and after a short stop there took a sleep er for Montreal over the White Mountain Division Well now a sleeper is all right but it proved to be a waker for me and I had a good chance to study the sky all night as I laid beside a window In the mean time others were sleeping 1 could tell this by a peculiar sound coming from some of the berths near me We were sidetracked at St Johnsbury Vt for a while waiting for the through train from Boston to Mont real We had been riding head towards the engine but after we were coupled on to the Boston train and started 1 said to my wife good Lord they are taking us to Moutreal feet first and so it was Well we were up and dressed early and had a good view of the country as we went speed ing along toward our destination We noticed that it was good farming land and very level for miles before we

THE DUTY OP A NEWSPAPER Unfavorable criticisms of news papers are frequently made on the ground that they misrepresent things That is true They Ire qnently do But the newspaper which is trying faithfully to give the reading public the news makes remarkably few mistakes when it is considered how many state ments it is called upon to make in eachissue Those who are in the habit of charging inaccuracy in newspapers should remember two things First the average news paper makes certainly not less than ten thousand statements a year If none of these were er roneous or slightly misleading it would be astounding And sec ondly it is customary for one mis take in a newspaper to provoke more criticism than the nine thousand ninehundred and nine tynine correct statements And this very fact is much in the newspapers favor If the mis takes were so common they would not excite so much comment The record for accuracy and truth as held by a standard newspaper of good repute and enjoying a wide circulation among aa intelligent clientalle would put to blush any stump speaker platform lecturer or magazine lecturer in the land We once knew of a

Back Numbers Two recent deaths in one family ir Machias recall boyhood memories of thal historic town Few towns in New Eng land of its size couldcompare with it ir the intelligence culture and sterling qualities of its people The old families included the Longfellows from the same stock as thepoet the Porters to one of this family Machia3 is indebt ed for her public library the OBriens of Revolutionary fame the Crockers the Hills Sargents and others all more or less distinguishedand all worthy law abiding Godfearing citizens Two mem bers of the Holway family and I think the last of their generation died withir one week Miss Eilen C Holway daughter of the late John and Leonici Crocker Holway died March 3 1912 aged 8 years As I recall her she was something of an invalid and it seems surprising that she should have attainec so great an age She was fond of flow ers and in the season there was a wealtl of bloom around the hospitable Holwaj home on what was known as the Dublir side of the Machias river I recall he as working about her flowers out oi doors or seated in a low
