PEIRCE BROS OF FRANKFORT Thousands of Tons of Granite Quarried from Mt Waldo The supply Inexhaustible Boston Sunday Globe 111 the directorate of the recently or ganized Panama construction company appear the names of John Peirce of New York and George Peirce of Frank fort Me Incase the contract is awarded to Oliver the Peirces will be identified with the heaviest of the subcontractors Their specialty will be the granite stone and construction work There are more Peirces down in Maine Hayward and Albert Peirce making four brothers iu all who have been almost literally brought up on granite representing a business started over half a century ago by their father the late George A Peirce but carefully improved enlarged and nour ished until the Peirce quarries are among the largest and most important iu the country While the Frankfort quarries are operated under several different names and corporate titles the great majority of the stock is all in the family John Peirce of New York who has attained fame as a contractor is the real selling agent of the Peirce granite and paving while George Peirce Hayward Peirce andAlbert Peirce see that the goods are delivered In 1853 while

POLITICAL POINTS Mr Bryan declares that President Roosevelts letter indorsing Mr Taft is irrelevant and immaterial That is what a tioubled lawyer always says of hostile testimony which he cannot refute Mr Bryan dodged the cameras in Baltimore for fear that the photographer would catch him without his victory ex pression He clearly realizes that his victory expression wont pass at its lace value in Maryland Mr Taft believes in revising the tariff with judgment Bryan proposes to re vise it with a bludgeon Being scared to death and overconfident at the same time is the condition ascrib ed to Chairman Frank H Hitchcock by Bryan organs Those who have known Hitchcock any length of time have never known him to be either Even though Mr Taft were not to come to California there is no doubt that Cal ifornia will go to him Los Angeles Times Now that Theodore Roosevelt Jr has reached his majority Taft has two votes in the Roosevelt family not counting Nicholas Lingworths Bryan is going to visit Judge Parker and Dave Hill Once before in a Presi dential campaign Bryan visited the Sage of Wolforts Roost but nothing happen ed Out in Missouri there

MRS BLAINE S LETTERS Edited by Her Daughter Mrs Harriet S Blaine Beal Mesgrs Duffield Co published last Saturday The Letters of Mrs James G Blaine edited by her daughter Mrs Harriet S Blaine Beal As excerpts from familiar letters that passed be tween the wife of one of the great his torical characters of America and her children and relatives and friends they have a peculiar and intimate charm For Mrs Blaine as this book proves was an excellent letter writer vivacious keen wilted and humorous She draws excel lent little vignettes of Mr Blames fa mous contemporaries his friends and his enemies She makes passing allusions to the great events of the day which are full of insight and acumen Unfortunately she and all her family were in Augusta dur ing Mr Blaines successful candidacy for the Republican nomination in 1884 and the unsuccessful campaign for the presidency that Vilowed Consequently this exciting period goes unchronicled There is very little about Benjaman Har rison that little only indicating that she did not like him The letters begin in 1871 when Blaine was at the height of his popularity as the Speaker of the House and end in 1899

u Sylvester Cottrell and Some ot His Descendants Sylvester Cottrell belonged to the Westerly R I family which is still rep resented in that town Buying land in Islesboro about 1772 he settled on what is now called Hewes Point having a tannery there it is said The Westerly records show that on June 7 1767 he was married to Peggy Margaret Pen dleton daughter of Thomas Pendleton of Stonington Conn and later of Isles boro Maine Sept 4 1789 Silvester Cotterell sold 100 acres of land in Isles boro to Stephin Pendleton the deed be ing witnessed by Gideon Pendleton and Sylvester Cottrell Jr also July 1 1790 Silvester Cottell sold 100 acres to Samuel Jackson for 73 pounds 10 shill ings The name is variously spelled having four different spellings in one deed These transfers were probably made about the time he removed to N B where he died atMiramichi it is be lieved According to the Bangor Hist and Gen magazine his tombstone re cords that Sylvester Cottrell died Mar 20 1830 aged 88 and his wife Margaret died Oct 20 1833 aged 84 So far it has been impossible to find the record of Sylvesters birth
