SIXTYFIVE MEN IN CONGRESS HAVE WORKED ON NEWSPAPERS Of These Twelve Are Senators and Fifty three Are Members of the House of Representatives Sixtyflve members of Congress have served as newspaper men in one ca pacity or another according to the Congressional Directory Of these twelve are senators and fiftythree are members of the House Their newspaper jobs have ranged from typesetter to editor and owner Senator Henry F Ashurst of Arizona served as a reporter on a Williams Arizona newspaper Ever is A Hayes of the eighth Cal ifornia district with his brother is publisher of the San Jose Daily Morn ing Mercury and Herald and Charles H Randall the new member from the ninth district was a newspaper editor and publisher Edward Keating of the third Colo rado district started in at the age of fourteen as copyholder in a proofroom He served on Denver newspapers for twenty years as reporter city editor and managing editor In 1912 he pur chased the Pueblo Leader P Oakey Davis of the first Connecticut district for four years was connected with the Hartford Courant Senator James H Brady of Idaho acknowledges that he edited a paper for two years Clyde H
