Incorporated in 1862 by Act of Congress providing for the construction of a continuous line from the Missouri River to the Pacific Ocean. The connection of the line with the Central Pacific at Promontory, Utah, completed the first transcontinental railroad in 1869.

LC has a Rand McNally and Company map, measuring 35 x 45 cm., which uses the new name for the first time.
