7Sf3r7S VUW Jh r T I r obh i THE WASHINGTON HERALD MONDAY APRIL 3 1913 AN APPEAL THE AMERICAN PEOPLE Let us alleviate human suffering and preserve life not help to destroy it 99 TO AS a result of receiving hundreds of thousands of letters cables and messages through various sources containing heartbroken appeals prayers and pleas from the people of our mother countries we the undersigned editors and publishers have concluded to place this appeal before the great American people on behalf of our readers The readers of our newspapers are vitally affected almost without exception by this disastrous conflict of the European nations Their brothers their sisters parents children or relatives live in the waning countries This does not mean that the Ameri can people as a whole is not vitally affected but our readers are more closely linked through the bonds of blood relationship with the peoples of countries now plunged in the depths of barbaric warfare Each days mail with its news of the pitiful progress of the war brings some new and bitter anguish to the hearts of our people The pleas of the millions of widowed mothers the appeals of the fatherless chil
