v __ Early Incidents Of the Civil War THE STORY OF THE FRIGATE CUMBERLAND BY CAPTAIN JOHN O JOHNSON OF LIBERTY ME To the Editor of The Journal A few years ago 1 wrote a series of ar ticles relative to the U S Navy which were published in The Journal and which I have reason to believe were well received by the intelligent read ers of your valuable paper Many who read those articles are like Pip in Dick ens Great Expectations continual ly calling tor more and this is my ex cuse for again troubling you to read my poor manuscript and to correct the bad spells Though 1 have not the personal knowledge of the events I am about to describe that 1 had in relation to those of which I have previously written yet circumstances made me very conversant with my present sub ject which is the old US Frigate Cum berland a sailing ship that was very much in evidence before and at the be ginning of the war of the rebellion and which was sunk by the rebel ram Merri mac at Newport News April 8 1802 Since that time she seems to be

North Waldo Pomona Grange North Waldo Pomona Grange was en tertained by Star of Progress Grange in Jackson Wednesday Sept 10th Although the sky was dark and the clouds threatening there was a goodly number present from the nearby granges and a pleasant and instructive meeting resulted Worthy Master O B Dow pre sided and the meeting was duly opened while Mr and Mrs F I Cronkhite satis factorily supplied the stations of Steward and Chaplain respectively Morning Light Sunrise Comet and Harvest Home Granges were represented besides the host grange During the business session a commu nication was read from the Lecturer of Waldo Pomona extending an invitation to tile members to meet with that Pomona at Frederick Ritchie Grange hall in Waldo Tuesday Sept 23rd The invitation was unanimously accepted At this time Mr and Mrs Sidney Tibbetts were introduced and received the instructions of the de gree of Pomona B WFarniiam of Comet Grange presided at the piano during the ceremony after which a delicious dinner was served by ladies of Star of Progress Grange and an enjoyable social hour fol lowed Grange was reassembled in the fifth de gree and the choir rendered a pleasing selection
