1 00000 OCoflOOOOOOO 000000 o009O0of0C4 0Q1 000 8 000 d I 1Vooooooýoooooeoooooooooo4C OQUWWU99sOOOOO 0 W ITH the twentyfirst anniver sary of the Butte Inter Moun tain no subject comes up more pleasantly than the relations of this paper to the press of the state of Montana Since the Inter Mountain was launched kind words have been said of Its efforts to fill the field it served with the news and a debt of gratitude is owed to every newspaper in the state When the Inter Mountain was estab lished newspapers in Montana were not as numerous as they are today and the editors might be easily counted on the fingers of one hand The ield has ex panded since that time and this paper has counted each new recruit and old veteran as its friend Two years ago upon the anniversary of this newspaper the theme that naturally suggested itself for a fullpage illustrated story for the Saturday Inter Mountain was the editors of the various seetlans of the state of Montana They are the salt of the earth the pillars of society and the mainstay of the public spirit which is urging the state on its upward way George

m JEROME E WILLIAMS the northwest In the fall of 1889 he entered the law office of Congressman A J Campbell of Living ston who had just arrived from Reed City Michi gan One year later he engaged in newspaper work and for the next eight years his labors were spent al ternately between the law office of Mr Campbell and the offices of the Post Herald and Enterprise news papers In the fall of 1894 Mr Williams took up the study of shorthand alone and mastered the Ben Pitman system The following year was spent in newspaper reporting and in the winter of 1895 he entered the law office of Campbell Stark as their chief stenographer In July 1897 he was appointed court stenographer of the Sixth Judicial district J B F Hoover On the eve of August 24 1899 the city of Living ston was shocked by the intelligence that at 625 one of the most respected citizens had met his untimely death by the accidental discharge of a gun The sadness and regrets of his death grew more intense as everybody reflected on the loss of him as a citizen member of prominent fraternal societies efficient co

The Wars of the Princess De Sagan In Emeperor William II of Germany the shrewd Princess de Sagan encoun ters a foeman worthy of her kill and of this dispute all Europe s talking It is announced by the German kaiser that he 1 will not permit the da Sagan inheritance founded y a Sagan in the principality of that manor in Silesia to pass into the hands of the French v fe of the decrepit prince who was at one time the acknowl edged Beau Brummel of all France These German estates are of vast ex tent They arc valued at between 2000 000 and 3000000 and produce an annual rental of about 100000 The emperor can do as he likes legally The estates are held as a gift of the crown under an old law and William has power to recognize any heir he may choose That heir may ultimately be the Princess of Fuersten berg I Jeanne Alexandrine de Sagan is un questionably a remarkable woman i For a matter of thirty odd years she has reigned a queen in exclusive Parisian circles despite the stain upon her fathers name and her own unconventional life j She
