Lloyd's new map of the United States, the Canadas, and New Brunswick, from the latest surveys showing every railroad & station finished to June 1862 and the Atlantic and Gulf coasts from the United States Superintendent's official reports of the Coast Survey by order of Congress

"Entered according to Act of Congress, in the year 1862, by J. T. Lloyd." General map of the eastern United States showing state and county boundaries, cities and towns, forts, roads, and railroads. This map was in the possession of Jedediah Hotchkiss at the time of his death. Major Hotchkiss served as topographic engineer with the Army of Northern Virginia. In July 1948, the Library of Congress purchased his map collection. Handwritten note on the verso reads "Lloyd's [sic] map of the United States, 1863 captured and used as part of my collection of maps, during the Civil War, 1861-5. Jed. Hotchkiss, Top. Eng., 2nd. Plan of a survey for the proposed Boston and Providence Rail-Way

Topographic strip map showing proposed lines of survey. This is the earliest railroad map represented in the Library's map collections. It is listed as one of the "Rail Roads Never Before Delineated" by Henry S. Tanner in his Memoir on the Recent Surveys ... (Philadelphia, 1829). It was incorporated in June 1831 and was first intended forhorse-drawn power. [From published bibliography]

"D. McGowan and George H. Hildt's 1859 map of the United States west of the Mississippi was based on an official map of 1857 produced by the Pacific railroad surveys. In the 1850s, Americans concluded that they needed to build a transcontinental railroad linking the east and center of the country with the Pacific coast. The U.S. Congress authorized the army topographical service to undertake engineering surveys and general assessments of five possible routes: from Saint Paul, Minnesota; from Council Bluffs, Iowa; from Saint Louis, Missouri; from Memphis, Tennessee; and from Vicksburg, Mississippi. Cities, states, and business groups competed fiercely to be the eastern terminus of the transcontinental railroad. This map offers an excellent example of a promotional map used to encourage settlement and investment in the American West. Published in Saint Louis, it emphasizes potential routes emanating from that city. The focus on Pike's Peak highlights the recent discovery of gold in Colorado. The map is hand-colored, framed in decorative borders, and shows drainage, state boundaries, cities and towns, and transportation and communication networks." World Digital Library.
