EARLY DAYSJN JACKSON REMINISCENCES OF AN OLD SETTLER Thinking that stories of old times as told by our older people would he of in terest to our readers we several weeks ago wrote to a number of old men in this and surrounding towns asking them to call on us when in 1J rooks This week we had the pleasure of meeting and conversing with one of these venerable men in the person of Uncle Jewell Piper of Jackson who cailed at our office in response to our letter He said he would have called before this had he not been so busy for after harvesting his own large crop of hay lie had been working by the day haying lor others and didnt want to quit until everybody had got quite through After getting well seated and ins pipe lighted Uncle Jewell said he was ready to talk A few leading questions got him under way and for about two hours we sat and listened to the stories and happenings of the earlier days as they fell from the lips ot this citizen of Jackson Uncle Jewell says he was born in Jackson December 111808 and therefore will be

Maine FolfcsAbroad A Word for the Belfast Club of Boston Maine Reunions in Brockton and Worces ter Mass To all Belfast People Abroad and at Home The reunion of the Belfast Club of Boston March 10th was a most delightful affair and while it is still fresh in our minds I wish through the medium of The Journal to catch the ears and hearts of some of our older Belfast people who have res ided in Boston and its suburbs for 25 years or more and no doubt have in some instances lost interest in the old home on the shores of the Penobscot As a general thing as we grow older our thoughts turn to the home of our youth and we become more or less ret rospective and live over the good times and happiness we enjoyed there We feel now that the club member ship is on a sound foundation that we can hold what we have but we want to see a generous increase before another year The older ones probably reason something like this there would be few if any that they know and that they are too old etc We are never too old

The Belfast Club of Boston THE FIRST ANNUAL MEETING APRIL 24th A SUCCESS A LIST OF THtSE PRESENT Friday evening April 24th at Hotel Vendome the first meeting of the Bel fast Club of Boston was held The event proved a far greater success than any one anticipated There were about 115 people present and many came hun dreds of miles for the sake of renewing old friendships and of joining the club There were representatives from Spring field Worcester New Bedford Provi dence It I and a few were from Bel fast Ninetyfive people were enrolled as members of the club The recep tion began at 030 the receiving group comprising these ladies Mrs Annie I McKeen Mrs Henry C Daniels Mrs Annabel Knight Mrs Mary K Dahl Miss Cora A Fames Miss Mary E Pierce Miss Flora A Burgess and Mrs John A Savage It was pleasing to see some of the older members of the party renew old friendships made 40 or 50 years ago and to hear them relate anec dotes of their younger days spent in Belfast The reception was very in formal and not much time had elapsed before both old and young were
