20 THE WHITE MOUNTAINS It Is hard to realize that within the mem ory of men still living the White Mountains were still undiscovered as a summer resort says the Listener in the Boston Tran script To put them on a low plane In the capacity of the producer of millions of dol lars annually for hotels and railroads they are a triumph of newspaper writing up They had of course been noted as natural features of New England ever since the English first settled in the Merrimack Val ley in the 16405 Then that omnivorous seeker of knowledge Rev Manasseh Cut ler of Ipswich and Timothy Dwight of Western Massachusetts and a Boston par ty containing such kindred spirits as Dr J Bigelow Dr Francis Booth F C Gray and Chief Justice Shaw explored them in the last years of the eighteenth century and the first of the nineteenth and the very fact that these journeyings are recorded in history shows that in the first half of the last cen tury it was about as rare for people to visit the White Mountains as it is now to go to Labrador or Greenland Thelr wonders bad been topographically set
