Printers Given Raise Of 150 and Control Of Teletypesetting Contract terms for a 150 weekly wage increase and a joint committee to gather information about teletypesetting procedures have been accepted by Columbia Typographical Union members employed by Washington djdly newspapers The oneyear contract effective May 1 was ratified by a 178to 152 vote of union members at Turners Arena yesterday Nego tiations have been under way since last September Represen tatives of publishers and Local 101 had 35 collective bargaining sessions before reacing an agree ment last Tuesday It gives the union jurisdiction over operation of any teletype setting equipment that may be in stalled in newspaeper plants here It sets up a Joint Experimental Committee including two man agement and two union represen tatives to work out procedures and conditions covering the in troduction of training for proper manning requirements standards of competency scales of wages and other matters pertaining to their use and operation Tape Perforated by Keyboard Newspaper plants in Washing ton set type by manually operated linotype machines Teletypeset ting equipment consists of a type perforating machine operated by a keyboard similar to that of a typewriter and an operating unit attached to the standard type

TheGlasgowCourier Published very Friday at Glasgow Montana T J HOCKING Editor Entered as second class matter Oc tober 61911 at the postoffice at Glas Cow Montana under the act of March S 1879 f UNFAIR TO NEWSPAPERS There are two proposed measures pending in the state senate and house which are so manifestly unfair to newspapers that every newspaper in the state most heartily should condemn them and what is more the facts re garding them should be made so evi dent that the justice of the newspaper claim as to those measures impropri ety would be sanctioned by the entire state The bills in question relate to the giving of county printing contracts their purpose being to make it pos sible to award such contracts to job printing offices not connected with newspaper establishments There are a thousand arguments that could be offered against such measures as those When a new community begins its career is it the newspaper or the job printing office that first establishes itself in that new locality being will ing to share the towns ups and downs and lend its best efforts toward the upbuilding of the place It is the newspaper of course

NEWS OF THE WEEK Maine Matters Lawrence Bros of South Gardiner have sold to Boston par ties Crocker township for 110000 It contains 20000 acres and is said to be one of the best spruce tracts in Maiue today It is particularly well situated being bandy to either water or railroad Law rence Bros bought this tract of land three years ago for 40000 and have therefore netted a profit of 70000 and their original investment has paid them a dividend of over 50 per cent each year Lightning struck and wrecked the roof of Charles J Treworgys lumber mill at Ellsworth Falls June 14 The 15 men in the building were shocked by the electricity three men being unconscious for some hours The lire which followed the bolt was extinguished before much damage was doneThe Congregational clergy men of Hancock county in conference at Bluehill June 14th adopted resolutions condemning the flagrant violation of the marriage contract and the deplorable in crease of divorces iu the State The adoption of the resolution carried with it the agreement that clergymen of the conference should not solemnize marriage where one has or both parties have been divorced_Samuel Bryant a prominent citizen

PEIRCE BROS OF FRANKFORT Thousands of Tons of Granite Quarried from Mt Waldo The supply Inexhaustible Boston Sunday Globe 111 the directorate of the recently or ganized Panama construction company appear the names of John Peirce of New York and George Peirce of Frank fort Me Incase the contract is awarded to Oliver the Peirces will be identified with the heaviest of the subcontractors Their specialty will be the granite stone and construction work There are more Peirces down in Maine Hayward and Albert Peirce making four brothers iu all who have been almost literally brought up on granite representing a business started over half a century ago by their father the late George A Peirce but carefully improved enlarged and nour ished until the Peirce quarries are among the largest and most important iu the country While the Frankfort quarries are operated under several different names and corporate titles the great majority of the stock is all in the family John Peirce of New York who has attained fame as a contractor is the real selling agent of the Peirce granite and paving while George Peirce Hayward Peirce andAlbert Peirce see that the goods are delivered In 1853 while

Publishers Map Fight on Closed Guild Shop Editors Take Stand After Convention of Editorial Workers Claim Unions Resolutions on Spanish War and Court Bill Menace Freedom of Press By United Press CHICAGO American newspaper publishers are on record today as unalterably opposed to the closed Guild shop or any other form of closed shop for those who prepare and edit news and pictures for news papers A resolution to that effect was adopted unanimously late yesterday at a convention of newspaper pub lishers from all parts of the United States The publishers declared termination not to enter agreement with editorial upon a closed shop basis their de into any employes The convention which was called after the St Louis Guild convention adopted a bargaining code which in cluded mandatory rules calling for a closed or Guild shop in all contracts with newspapers was presided over by JamesG Stahlman president of the American Newspaper Publishers Asso ciation It was announced there were 565 delegates present from 11 newspaper organizations Text of the resolution follows The newspaper editors and pub lishers from all sections of the United States individually and thru their cooperative associations listed below are gathered here to take action
