BETHLEHEM N H JULY 12 1919 what similar cog railway for moun tain climbing and purposed to build a railroad up the Rigi Just what influence the studies of the Mt Washington system had upon the Swiss plans is not known but the Rigi railway was soon under con struction and was opened in 1870 or 1871 The Riggenbach patents were used and everyone who is familiar with the Mt Washington device can see at a glance that the mechanism is decidedly different put no doubt the demonstration of a cog railway in actual operation up a mountain gave great encouragement to the projectory of the Swiss railway and thus Mt Washington pointed out the way for the building of the Alpine road Through Mr Aikens enterprise the Summit house was built capable of accommodating 200 persons The house was built in part on land leased from the owners of the terri tory and this fact combined with the rivalry of the two enterprises led to friction and ultimately to litiga tion We do not feel disposed to pay for the use of the summit and to have to fight for it wrote Mr Aiken to his antagonists on one

20 THE WHITE MOUNTAINS It Is hard to realize that within the mem ory of men still living the White Mountains were still undiscovered as a summer resort says the Listener in the Boston Tran script To put them on a low plane In the capacity of the producer of millions of dol lars annually for hotels and railroads they are a triumph of newspaper writing up They had of course been noted as natural features of New England ever since the English first settled in the Merrimack Val ley in the 16405 Then that omnivorous seeker of knowledge Rev Manasseh Cut ler of Ipswich and Timothy Dwight of Western Massachusetts and a Boston par ty containing such kindred spirits as Dr J Bigelow Dr Francis Booth F C Gray and Chief Justice Shaw explored them in the last years of the eighteenth century and the first of the nineteenth and the very fact that these journeyings are recorded in history shows that in the first half of the last cen tury it was about as rare for people to visit the White Mountains as it is now to go to Labrador or Greenland Thelr wonders bad been topographically set
