Covers area between Massachusetts and Virginia and west to the Mississippi River. Shows "finished" and "proposed" railroads. A mileage chart entitled "Rail Road Routes from Seaboard to the Interior" appears at lower right of map. Harrisburg to Pittsburgh Railroad is part of the Pennsylvania Railroad. See entry 517.

Map of routes for a Pacific railroad

Relief shown by hachures and spot heights. Appears in the U.S. War Dept.'s Report of the Secretary of War on the several Pacific railroad explorations, 1855. "This is a hurried compilation of all the authentic surveys and is designed to exhibit the relations of the different routes to each other. An elaborate map on scale of 1:3,000,000 is being compiled and is in an advanced state." In manuscript ink on verso: "Maps showing boundaries of proposed territory of Arizona belonging to the [illegible], Department of the Interior." Annotations in ink at lower center. LC copy imperfect: Mounted on cloth, minor discoloration horizontally along lower right half and along upper left half. Available also through the Library of Congress Web site as a raster image.

General street map showing wards, piers, pier numbers, and streetcar lines. Shows 1-mile radial distance from City Hall. Issued as the summer 1870 no. of "Mackey's shipping indicator" (broadsheet). "Entered according to act of Congress, in the year 1870, by Joseph Mackey, in the Clerk's Office of the District Court of the Southern District of New York." Imperfect: Fold-lined, torn (halved) at fold line, annotated in ink in lower margin "Deposited June 15ʺ 1870, no. 877." Includes text, descriptive directory of ship arrivals/departures, and cameo impression of the District Court. Available also through the Library of Congress Web site as a raster image.

Sectional map of part of Nebraska showing relief by hachures, drainage, cities and towns, and the survey lines. "Drawn by J.J. O'Brien." Incorporated in 1862 by Act of Congress providing for the construction of a continuous line from the Missouri River to the Pacific Ocean. The connection of the line with the Central Pacific at Promontory, Utah, completed the first transcontinental railroad in 1869.

Map showing the Norfolk & Western Railroad and its connections

Map of the eastern United States showing drainage, cities and towns, distance by 100-mile concentric circles centered on Roanoke, and the railroad network with emphasis on the main line. This line became one of the world's greatest coal carriers. It began as the City Point Rail Road from Petersburg to City Point, a distance of 9 miles. It was consolidated in 1870 as the Atlantic, Mississippi, and Ohio Railroad. See entry 491. It was sold in 1881 under the above name. In 1896 it was reorganized as the Norfolk and Western Railway Company.
