SIXTYFIVE MEN IN CONGRESS HAVE WORKED ON NEWSPAPERS Of These Twelve Are Senators and Fifty three Are Members of the House of Representatives Sixtyflve members of Congress have served as newspaper men in one ca pacity or another according to the Congressional Directory Of these twelve are senators and fiftythree are members of the House Their newspaper jobs have ranged from typesetter to editor and owner Senator Henry F Ashurst of Arizona served as a reporter on a Williams Arizona newspaper Ever is A Hayes of the eighth Cal ifornia district with his brother is publisher of the San Jose Daily Morn ing Mercury and Herald and Charles H Randall the new member from the ninth district was a newspaper editor and publisher Edward Keating of the third Colo rado district started in at the age of fourteen as copyholder in a proofroom He served on Denver newspapers for twenty years as reporter city editor and managing editor In 1912 he pur chased the Pueblo Leader P Oakey Davis of the first Connecticut district for four years was connected with the Hartford Courant Senator James H Brady of Idaho acknowledges that he edited a paper for two years Clyde H

Senator Warren G Harding of Ohic chairman of the convention Mr Fairbanks will be notified by i committee headed by Senator W11 liar E Borah of Idaho Leaders All Talk Harmony At 201 pm the convention ad journed There were expressions o harmony from all the leaders an among the delegates The delegation which on the final ballot had cas votes for others than Mr Hughes mad statements declaring their loyalty t the nominees Six months ago said Chairmai Charles D Hilles of the republican na tional committee I said the nom inee would be born in the convention and he was T am very much pleased of course said Mr Hitchcock It means a re united republican party and victor In November The nomination of Mr Hujrncs was mad possible so soon by an overnigh breakup of the allied favorite sons combination which early this morninj released its delegates practically al of whom were known to favor Mr Hughes when freed from their instruc tions Favorite Sons Withdrawn When the convention began business shortly before noon the withdrawal o the favorite sons was announced fron the platform one after another ant the votes began flopping into th Hughe column

r National Newspaper Advertising How When and Where to Use It BY WILLIAM H RANKIN President Wm H Rankin Co New York Washington Chicago COMPETITION to secure na tional markets has become so keen that individual business firms are eagerly searching for new methods by which to domi nate the attention of the public and to dominate it first searching for methods that will give more intensive sales results that can be obtained by any usual form of advertising This method has been found it is National Newspaper Advertising As is invariably the case the new method was found not only to be an acceptable substitute for the old but to have certain superiorities over the old meth od of magazines plus newspa pers The ability of National news paper advertising to create large volume national sales has al ready been demonstrated Many million dollars have already been spent for the United States Government in this way helping to bring to the Government bil lions of dollars in return Mil lions more have been spent in this sort of advertising by com mercial firms and the results they have obtained have been highly remunerative The thing has been tried out

Electrical Transcription Woe Haunts Commission Broadcasters Ask That Announcement Ruling Be Eliminated AltogetherProducers Want Whole Status Reviewed BY THE RADIO EDITOR ONE of radios bewhiskered squabbles gingerly side stepped by the old Federal Radio Commissionthat of announcing of electrical transcriptions as suchhas arisen to haunt the new Federal Communica tions Commission The F C C when it took over the functions of its predecessor last Summer found this issue on its door step but it was so engrossed in other more important matters that it gave the matter no attention Now how ever three formal steps have been taken which bring the matter forcibly before it The first was the adoption by the annual convention of the National Association of Broadcasters last Sep tember of a resolution petitioning the F C C to eliminate the requirements that electrically transcribed programs be announced as such and that they be treated in the same fashion as network or other live talent fea tures Promptly came the opposition of the American Federation of Mu sicians perennial objector to past efforts along this line It charged the broadcasters with trying to deceive listeners into believing that living rather than canned music was being performed

MANY SPLENDID THAYERS FOUND IN LOCAL GALLERIES A JL________ WORK STRICTLY AMERICAN French Training Left No Mark Upon Character of Artist Who Is Represented in Three Capital Galleries by 31 Paintings Children Often Were His Models painting certain great works in stantly come to mind as for all time outstanding such as La Farges mural of The Ascension in the Church of the Ascension New York Homers Alls Well in the Boston Museum of Fine Arts and Thayers Caritas which has found permanent placement in the same institution The quality of Thayers work was happily recognized during his life time but since his death in 1921 his fame has steadily increased and found universal acceptance He was not a prolific painter When In 1922 a memorial exhibition of his work was held in the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York only 78 paintings some of which were un finished wer catalogued Under these circumstances it is very re markable and a matter of consider able congratulation that no less than 31 Thayers are in the permanent collections of art museums in Wash ington Sixteen are in the Freer Gal lery collection 13 are included in the collection left to
