SHELVING PRIVATELY OWNED AUTOMOBILES Only last week President Roosevelt stated that he probably would commandeer all tires on privately owned automobiles Tuesday Donald M Nelson voiced practical ly the same opinion and went into detail about the produc tion of synthetic rubber But there was no mention made of the millions of tons of scrap rubber that have been ga thered and are in the hands of the junk dealers of which no report has been made It seems to us that something is wrong with our whole rubber setup Spending of 20000 000 to put reclaiming plants in the various states would eliminate the shipment ot the waste material in scrap rubber and this ought to be ac comphshed as the synthetic rubber production which is certainly neglected W hether Nelson is not big enough for the job or he is trying to do too much himself is beside the point The rubber situation is being badly managed The commandeer of tires on privately owned automobiles would be killing the goose that is laying the golden egg Carbon County News O H P SHELLEY Editor and Owner Published every Friday at Red Lodge Carbon Co Montana Entered at the

HUES CITY KEEPS OPEN BOOST FOR SCRIBES The newspaper men of northern Montana who were fortunate enough to attend the recent State Press asso ciation convenion at Miles City got a new angle on the metropolis of the Powder River country They went down there with the impression that Milestown was the place of the last stand of the cowman accustomed to living in the raw They expected an outing on the frontier with all its red blooded riotness In this they were disappointed They found Milestown one of the robust cities of the state the home of 10000 happy and prosperous peo ple The only evidence of the old puncher days was the substantial foot ings of the banks They found a beau tiful city of substance paved streets so modern and up to the minute that all automobiles must be parked in the center of the pavement substantial and modern business buildings blocks of them palatial homes bord ering beautiful boulevards the most pretentiousElks home in the state and the most hospitable people there are in any city in all the west Every visitor who went to the con vention came away with the impres sion that a
