THE REPUBLICAN JOURNAL BELFAST THURSDAY APRIL 29 1909 __it_ PUBLISHED EVERY THURSDAY BY The Republican Journal Publishing Co CHARLES A PILSBURY Editor and Business Manager Subscription Terms In advance 200 a year 1 00 for six months 50 cents for three months Advertising Terms For one square one inch length in column 50 cents for one week and 25 cents for each subsequent insertion THAT SURPLUS REVENUE The question was recently asked in a Maine paper as to the amount per capita received by this State in 1838 from the surplus money under the Jackson ad ministration It was referred to in a sketch of the life of the late Mrs Salome Sellers of Deer Isle and at that time the enquiry was made as to amount dis tributed It was given by one person as 100 per capita while others united in the opinion that it wjs less than 10 The latter conclusion we believe to be cor rect although we have not been able to ascertain the exact amount The history in brief of this distribution of money by the national government is as follows The distribution of the treasury sur plus among the States in preference to

u Sylvester Cottrell and Some ot His Descendants Sylvester Cottrell belonged to the Westerly R I family which is still rep resented in that town Buying land in Islesboro about 1772 he settled on what is now called Hewes Point having a tannery there it is said The Westerly records show that on June 7 1767 he was married to Peggy Margaret Pen dleton daughter of Thomas Pendleton of Stonington Conn and later of Isles boro Maine Sept 4 1789 Silvester Cotterell sold 100 acres of land in Isles boro to Stephin Pendleton the deed be ing witnessed by Gideon Pendleton and Sylvester Cottrell Jr also July 1 1790 Silvester Cottell sold 100 acres to Samuel Jackson for 73 pounds 10 shill ings The name is variously spelled having four different spellings in one deed These transfers were probably made about the time he removed to N B where he died atMiramichi it is be lieved According to the Bangor Hist and Gen magazine his tombstone re cords that Sylvester Cottrell died Mar 20 1830 aged 88 and his wife Margaret died Oct 20 1833 aged 84 So far it has been impossible to find the record of Sylvesters birth

North Waldo Pomona Grange North Waldo Pomona Grange was en tertained by Star of Progress Grange in Jackson Wednesday Sept 10th Although the sky was dark and the clouds threatening there was a goodly number present from the nearby granges and a pleasant and instructive meeting resulted Worthy Master O B Dow pre sided and the meeting was duly opened while Mr and Mrs F I Cronkhite satis factorily supplied the stations of Steward and Chaplain respectively Morning Light Sunrise Comet and Harvest Home Granges were represented besides the host grange During the business session a commu nication was read from the Lecturer of Waldo Pomona extending an invitation to tile members to meet with that Pomona at Frederick Ritchie Grange hall in Waldo Tuesday Sept 23rd The invitation was unanimously accepted At this time Mr and Mrs Sidney Tibbetts were introduced and received the instructions of the de gree of Pomona B WFarniiam of Comet Grange presided at the piano during the ceremony after which a delicious dinner was served by ladies of Star of Progress Grange and an enjoyable social hour fol lowed Grange was reassembled in the fifth de gree and the choir rendered a pleasing selection

0 w As a result of the recent news stories about the citizens councils the sovereignty commission and Billy C Barton The PetalHarvey Dispatch PO Box 355 Petal Miss commented as follows THE PETALHARVEY DISPATCH REPRESENTS THE PETALHARVEY AREA The PetalHarvey Dispatch is the only newspaper domiciled in Petal Miss In a news release out of Jackson Miss last week re ference was made to the fact an individual Barton who is in controversy with the Citizens Council of the state is a close friend of P D East publisher of the Petal Paper Petal Miss At the present time there is no newspaper published at Petal by P D East The only newspaper of record in Petal is the Petal Harvey Dispatch published by the Leaf River Publications and it has no connection whatsoever with any other news paper ever published here We hold no brief for the Citizens council the Sov erignty Commission or P D East We do believe that this newspaper supported by the business men and the citizens of Petal should be fully rec ognized as the only newspaper representing Petal and its citizens The citizens council should be more careful in its presentations and
