DILLINGER ELUDES NET OF PURSUERS U S Men Mass in Vicinity of St Paul Preparing for Finish Fight Continued From First Page_ desperadoes shot their way to free dom killing two men and wounding four others Dillingers other wound was sus tained March 31 when he and at least two associates blasted their way out of a police and Federal trap in a St Paul apartment Dillinger was shot in the leg and later attended by Dr Clayton E May Minneapolis phy sician May and his nurse are now held on charges of harboring a criminal NET IS TIGHTENED Escape of Dillinger Is Feared by Officials CHICAGO April 26 The law with 5000 eager arms slammed shut the stable door today but the horse John Dillingerapparently was gone A great circle ol men blocking high ways and stopping all suspicious ap pearing persons was swung for hun dreds of miles around Mercer Wis to prevent the escape of the gunman yet even as the circle tightened there came reports that the desperado had lipped through Federal men burning under such criticism as seldom is made of Gov ernment detectives were massing some where in the vicinity of St Paul Minn

Electrical Transcription Woe Haunts Commission Broadcasters Ask That Announcement Ruling Be Eliminated AltogetherProducers Want Whole Status Reviewed BY THE RADIO EDITOR ONE of radios bewhiskered squabbles gingerly side stepped by the old Federal Radio Commissionthat of announcing of electrical transcriptions as suchhas arisen to haunt the new Federal Communica tions Commission The F C C when it took over the functions of its predecessor last Summer found this issue on its door step but it was so engrossed in other more important matters that it gave the matter no attention Now how ever three formal steps have been taken which bring the matter forcibly before it The first was the adoption by the annual convention of the National Association of Broadcasters last Sep tember of a resolution petitioning the F C C to eliminate the requirements that electrically transcribed programs be announced as such and that they be treated in the same fashion as network or other live talent fea tures Promptly came the opposition of the American Federation of Mu sicians perennial objector to past efforts along this line It charged the broadcasters with trying to deceive listeners into believing that living rather than canned music was being performed

MANY SPLENDID THAYERS FOUND IN LOCAL GALLERIES A JL________ WORK STRICTLY AMERICAN French Training Left No Mark Upon Character of Artist Who Is Represented in Three Capital Galleries by 31 Paintings Children Often Were His Models painting certain great works in stantly come to mind as for all time outstanding such as La Farges mural of The Ascension in the Church of the Ascension New York Homers Alls Well in the Boston Museum of Fine Arts and Thayers Caritas which has found permanent placement in the same institution The quality of Thayers work was happily recognized during his life time but since his death in 1921 his fame has steadily increased and found universal acceptance He was not a prolific painter When In 1922 a memorial exhibition of his work was held in the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York only 78 paintings some of which were un finished wer catalogued Under these circumstances it is very re markable and a matter of consider able congratulation that no less than 31 Thayers are in the permanent collections of art museums in Wash ington Sixteen are in the Freer Gal lery collection 13 are included in the collection left to
