WEATHER PREDICTIONS Hie Work of the C S Weather Bureau Bruttits to Commerce and Agriculture There is no other subject in which the people throughout the civilized world are so generally interested as they are in the weather and there its noth ing that exerts a greater influence on the affairs of men Although the weather has occupied mens minds to a great extent since the earliest days of the race and much scientific research has been made it is only within a com paratively few years that any systematic attempt has been made to record and diffuse meteorological data or knowl edge Since the work was taken up by the leading commercial nations of the world great advances have been made and great benefit has accrued particu larly to navigation and agriculture and allied branches The early Egyptians studied meteor ology as a branch of astronomy and Aristotle compiled a comprehensive work on the weather from their writ ings and his own observations He dis cussed prognostics of rain wind storms and fair weather but made no attempt to explain any of the phenomena Cicero Virgil and others wrote on the subject but they added little to the knowledge

60 YEARS OF DANCING prof J C Whitten is Light on Hie Feet at 80 Boston Sunday Globe In the northern part of the city of Belfast Me there lives a pleasing character in the person of Prof Jere miah C Whitten well known through the State as a dancing master and ex pert violinist and even at an advanced age the envy of all the country lads around as well as his city contempora ries Young at the age of nearly 80 years is Prof Whitten wiio is yet in the dizzy whirl of fashionable dances and still skilfully handles his violin in a manner which produces those rich tones of music known to the musician The subject of this sketch was born in Freedom Me the son of a farmer and mechanic and in that town his early days were passed At the age of 18 years after having taken a thorough course of study in Freedom academy he left home to teach school following that occupation several years From nis mother be inherited rich musical gifts and under her direction he began a study of music taking his first lesson on the violin from her the mother
