JOHN DOYLEMATCHMAKER When Louise Doyle entered the office ol Delancey A Griffin architects in the humble capacity of copyist the soul of her lather rosein angry rebellion Two years previous John Doyle had retired from the grocery business with a tidy income a substantial brick resi dence and chronic rheumatism When ever the malady loosened its grip Doyle wandered back to the scenes of his com mercial achievements IIis successor always gave him cordial welcome and a comfortable chair back of the cash iers booth was at bis disposal When too lame to walk as far as the store be consoled himself by playing innumer able games of pinochle in the lear of simpsons cigar store just across the street It was from a disastrous defeat at pinochle that he came home to hear that Louise was going to business I hc moment was inauspicious 1 never heard tell of such tonifool isIums My girl going to chase down town mx days in the week like the daughters of that noaccount Tom aundciv People will be questioning m credit next And she wont make enough to pay for the new feathers and fixings shellwant to say nothing of the shoe

WAIF OF THE OCEAN Bottle Thrown into Indian Sea Found off Cape Cod Floated for Twenty Eight j Year Ceorge T Maddox of Brockton Mass j is closely connected with the tale of a sea drifting bottle that lloated twenty eight years The bottle was thrown overboard in the Indian ocean from the vessel Hattie K Tapley inl74 Mad dox was third mate The bottle was recently picked up off t ape Cod It was intact with its lit tle message still preserved telling the whence what where of the bottle That was twentyeight years ago when Maddox was barely of age The bottle was washed from the In dian ocean to Cape Codfrom the far east to the far west from old world waters to New Ingland shores It has taken Ceorge T Maddox with vivid memory back to his younger life over the Indian ocean from his present days of furni ture selling in Brockton It is a strange story that lias thus come up out of tiie sea Tales have been told and retold ot bottles thrown from sailing vessels and picked til years later in faroff parts of the work These stories have been taken wit

CONCERNING THE CROW Ae a Pet or Pest Something About Bon Hassan Perhaps a little more might be said about the despised and troublesome crow We have one that has been with us a year and a half He was caught when old enough to fly and could feed himself and is not as tame as some we have seen But Ben Hassan that is his name will come when called and can see a piece of bread in your hand five or fifty rods away A crow can no doubt see as plainly fifty rods away as a man can two feet away from any object But Ben objects to come nearer his best friends than thirty feet and will keep a greater distance from a stranger unless he is in the lieu house where he has a spate barrel with a motherly old hen which left her quar ters and took up her abode with Ben Generally Ben is more of an expert than a person about liens He know s good and bad hens and hens with chickens and the rooster Some of the hens look just alike to a person but Ben knows them all He

RAY THOMPSON Wrote Novel While Employed In Sew Mill One of the most unique personalities in the Maine newspaper field today is Hay Thompson the genial editor of the Westbrook Gazette Following the sea in his youth writing a novel in a saw mill in his early manhood At fifty Mr Thompson bright and original as when he edited the Richmond Bee on which he did his first newspaper work of importance is still in harness and many of his friends predict even better work than his past successes yet to come Ray Thompson was born in Gardiner Maine in 1852 His father died during Rays infancy but he was cared for by the best of mothers to whom he was very much attach eji and whom he always speaks of as his best friend Mrs Thompson died in 1887 after see ing her talented son achieve a large degree of success in his chosen pro fession With her young son Mrs Thompson came to Richmond in 1859 when Ray was but seven years of age Ray Thompson made Richmond his home until 1894 when he sold the Richmond Bee of which he was proprietor to Dunham Alden Young Ray
