Outline map of the eastern United states including Cuba and the Gulf of Mexico. Shows the railroad network and steamship routes. Indicates the railroad land grant and the coal and iron deposits in Alabama. Distances from Washington, D.C., to New Orleans, La. are shown below the title. Chartered in 1853 and 1854. Consolidated with the Wills Valley Railroad, forming the Alabama and Chattanooga Railroad.

Map of routes for a Pacific railroad

Relief shown by hachures and spot heights. Appears in the U.S. War Dept.'s Report of the Secretary of War on the several Pacific railroad explorations, 1855. "This is a hurried compilation of all the authentic surveys and is designed to exhibit the relations of the different routes to each other. An elaborate map on scale of 1:3,000,000 is being compiled and is in an advanced state." In manuscript ink on verso: "Maps showing boundaries of proposed territory of Arizona belonging to the [illegible], Department of the Interior." Annotations in ink at lower center. Map of northwest part of United States and southwest part of Canada showing relief by hachures, drainage, isotherms, the wheat region, cities and towns, forts, routes and trails, the railroad network and the proposed Northern Pacific Railroad. The line was constructed under an act of Congress approved by Abraham Lincoln, July 2, 1864. It was completed in 1883 and approximates the route of exploration taken by Lewis and Clark in 1804-06.

A mileage chart entitled "Rail Road Routes from Seaboard to the Interior" appears at lower right of map. Harrisburg to Pittsburgh Railroad is part of the Pennsylvania Railroad. See entry 517.

Plan of the Battle of Bristoe Station, Orange and Alexandria Railroad, Va., Octr. 14th 1863.

Shows the area of Fairfax County, Va., which was the site of the Battle of Bristoe Station. The map is oriented with Cedar Run to the south, Bristoe to the west and indicates the route of the Orange and Alexandria Railroad. Also indicated are A. P. Hill's Corps, Army of Northern Virginia, engaging the Union's II Corps during its withdrawal toward Centreville, Va.
