Shows routes and dates of expeditions and surveys. Includes list of "Authorities" and inset "Territory of Alaska." Scale 1:3,000,000. The map covers an area from Lake Michigan to the Mississippi delta, and from Columbus, Ohio, to Little Rock, Ark. It shows Ft. Massac and "Capitol City" in southern Illinois and northern Kentucky as sites selected by the U.S. for the "Western Armory," and the probable future site for the seat of government of the United States or Western District of Columbia. Chartered January 9, 1852.

The line was created by an act of the state of Illinois, February 27, 1847, and amended July 27, 1851. The line reached the Mississippi River on February 22, 1854, where the first bridge to cross the river was opened on September 1, 1854, linking Rock Island, Ill., with Davenport, Iowa.
