New York and Erie Railroad diagram representing a plan of organization : exhibiting the division of academic duties and showing the number and class of employés engaged in each department : from the returns of September 1855

Company organizational diagrammatic map drawn in the form of a branching tree that identifies in its branches all of the functional offices of the railroad by name. Shows railroad trackage branches as straight lines radiating from the central office of the "Gen'l Sup't". The branches extend from New York (State) westward thru northern New Jersey and northern Pennsylvania to Lake Erie. "Published by permission." LC copy imperfect: Use-worn, brittle, fold-lined, torn, missing sections along the margins. LC copy annotated in ink handwriting in lower margin: 18[4?]. Deposited in Clerk's Office So. Dist. N.Y. Map of routes for a Pacific railroad

Relief shown by hachures and spot heights. Appears in the U.S. War Dept.'s Report of the Secretary of War on the several Pacific railroad explorations, 1855. "This is a hurried compilation of all the authentic surveys and is designed to exhibit the relations of the different routes to each other. An elaborate map on scale of 1:3,000,000 is being compiled and is in an advanced state." In manuscript ink on verso: "Maps showing boundaries of proposed territory of Arizona belonging to the [illegible], Department of the Interior." Annotations in ink at lower center. Partial cadastral map showing owners' names and acreages of larger landholdings in districts adjacent to the B&O R.R. in Washington D.C. and Montgomery County (Md.). "Entered according to act of Congress in the year 1890 by Francis R. Fava Jr. in the office of the Librarian of Congress, at Washington." North oriented towards the upper left. Includes notes, "Profile of the Metropolitan Branch B. & O.R.R. ... showing distances from Washington D.C. and elevations," and advertisement for "T. Janney Brown, general agent." Map and profile of the Orange and Alexandria Rail Road with its Warrenton Branch and a portion of the Manasses [sic] Gap Rail Road, to show its point of connection

Printed topographic strip map with manuscript annotations to show the geologic structure along the route of the railroad. The Alexandria and the Chesapeake and Ohio canals and stage stable for horses used on the Piedmont stage route to North Carolina are also indicated. The Orange and Alexandria Railroad Company was founded in 1848 to divert hinterland products away from Baltimore and Richmond to Alexandria, Va. Construction was begun in 1850 and was completed to Culpeper in 1852 and to Gordonsville in 1854, from where the rail line connected with the Virginia Central. Warrenton, originally on a proposed earlier route, was linked by a branch line in 1853. The Manassas Gap Railroad, the first rail line to cross the Blue Ridge Mountains, was completed to Strasburg in 1854 and joined Alexandria with the upper Piedmont Valley.
