u___ NEW IDEAS FOR HOME DECORATION HOUSEHOLD LETTER FROM JEANETTE VAN REYPEN Vkw York March 31 1906 It is said that the leader of New York society Mrs Astor never permits any change in the furnishings of her homes Once built and suitably fitted they are finished as permanently as the woodwork or walls of the house As wear makes renewals necessary articles are replaced in exact duplicate though to do this often involves fresh importation and great additional expense This is extreme conservatism but itcertainlv makes for repose and no one can be in touch with the best decorators here without realizing that the pendu lum is swinging toward simplicity and permanence in the selection of household belongings _ b 6 fashion harnessed Fashion has been put in harness and made to work not drive the busy women who preside over the household and who are responsible for its well The servant problem which is ever present and the need for time to devote to reading study and to social intercourse have combined to create a demand among intelligent women for furnishings and decorations that are not only pleasing to the eye but permanent and practical as well Even
