On sheet below map "We believe that the public lands ought, as far as possible, to be kept as homesteads for actual settlers; that all unearned lands heretofore improvidently granted to railroad corporations by the action of the Republican party should be restored to the public domain; and that no more grants of land shall be made to corporations, or be allowed to fall into the ownership of alien absentees. Plan of the Battle of Bristoe Station, Orange and Alexandria Railroad, Va., Octr. 14th 1863.

Shows the area of Fairfax County, Va., which was the site of the Battle of Bristoe Station. The map is oriented with Cedar Run to the south, Bristoe to the west and indicates the route of the Orange and Alexandria Railroad. Also indicated are A. P. Hill's Corps, Army of Northern Virginia, engaging the Union's II Corps during its withdrawal toward Centreville, Va.

Pennsylvania

"This 1829 map of Pennsylvania is the earliest general map of the state to show railroads. Several of the first railroads in the United States were built in Pennsylvania, where they were used to haul coal from mines to rivers and canals. The map also shows roads, canals, and proposed railroads. Counties are distinguished by color, and the main mountain ridges are shown by hachures. The map is by Anthony Finley (circa 1790-1840), an American map publisher based in Philadelphia, at the time the center of cartographic publishing in America. Finley's maps were known for their focus on clarity and for presenting only the most important facts and features. Finley produced numerous individual maps and two atlases, A New American Atlas (1826) and the New General Atlas (1831)." World Digital Library. Shows roads, canals, railroads, and proposed railroads. Fredericksburg to Petersburg, Va.

The purpose of this map is uncertain; it may have been to identify the rail lines within the corridor between Fredericksburg and Petersburg. Included (as phrased by Sneden) are the Richmond and Danville Railroad, Lynchburg Railroad, Norfolk and Petersburg Railroad, Virginia Central Railroad, and the Richmond Fredericksburg (Railroad). A few key events in the entire war are indicated such as the surrender of Lee at Appomattox.
