THE BEST TIMBER TREES How the Government Studies Them for thi Benefit of Forest Owners and the Public Timber owners and manufacturer will be interested in the results of thi detailed studies of commercial timbei trees which the Forest Service of thi V S Department of Agriculture ii making These studies are not confined exclusively to the wellknown trees oi recognized value but owing to thf rapid decrease in the supply of oui valuable woods include those cheapei woods whose properties are imperfect ly known Such studies of the tupelc gum and western hemlock have done much to overcome the common preju dice against these species and have add ea materially to their commercial im portance Commercial tree studies begin with the tree in the forest and follow it all the way to the finished product in the market The intermediate steps are many and complex but a little expla nation of them may not be amiss since they typify the field methods of a forest investigation The selection of a suitable place is the first step in this the aim is to ob tain average conditions as far as pos sible When the range of the species to be
