___ SB BELFAST IN 1904 THE JOURNALS ANNUAL REVIEW OE LOCAL EVENTS LOCAL INDUSTRIES Tlie Duplex Roller Bushing Co great ly enlarged its plant and facilities the past year The company bought the Dana building on Front street opposite their machine shop and moved much of the machinery there The wood de partment is on the ground floor on Front street and the machine shop in the basement The foundry is continued in its former location with the added rooms vacated by the machine depart ment A forge shop 45 by 65 feet has been built on the Dana property near the railroad track Tlie office was mov ed from the F A Knowlton store on Main street to the office room in the Dana building The company also bought the D Lane wharf which af fords a good water front privilege The business of the company is steadily in creasing and it is now a rival of the shoe factory as the leading industry of the city Leonard Barrows had an excellent years business at their shoe factory A full crew was given steady employment so much so that even for the necessary shut downs for stock taking the

THE VETERANS POLL TAX In the Maine House Feb 7th on motion of Mr Skidmore of Liberty an act to amend Chapter 163 Public Laws ot 1905 relating to the exemption of soldiers and sailors from poll tax was taken from the table Mr Skidmore then addressed the House rs follows Mr Speaker in tabling this bill my purpose was to call the attention of the members of the House to the fact that this bill was treading ou dangerous ground that it created a class legisla tion that is it relieved from taxation a certain portion of onr people who were well able to pay The law relat ing to a poll tax by some is considered to be absurd and wholly wrong but as for me I do not think so It gives to those w ho are young and just coming on the held of action and who have not had the privilege that others have had to acquire property ou which to be taxed a better and more thorough knowledge of the plan and conditions of government Now there is a law on the statute books which this law calls attention to which exempted all soldiers
