The Army and Reconstruction, 1865-1877

Within two months of Confederate General Robert E. Lee's surrender at Appomattox Court House on 9 April 1865, the Confederacy had collapsed, and its armed forces had ceased to exist. In the spring of 1865, the U.S. Army faced the unprecedented task of occupying eleven conquered Southern states and administering "Reconstruction" -- the process by which the former rebellious states would be restored to the Union. But a rapid demobilization of the Army placed the remaining occupation troops at a disadvantage almost from the start. Mark Bradley traces the Army's law enforcement, stability, and peacekeeping roles in the South from May 1865 to the end of Reconstruction in 1877, marking a unique period in American history. During that time, the Southern states remained under military occupation, and for several years, they were also ruled by military government. Veteran Army commanders such as Philip H. Sheridan, John M. Schofield, Daniel E. Sickles, Edward R. S. Canby, and Winfield S. Hancock may have found the work of Reconstruction less dangerous than fighting the Civil War had been, but they also found it no less challenging.

Property map of the Canal Zone showing property belonging to the United States of America, Panama R. R. Co., and lands claimed by private persons

"This large, detailed, map is from the collection of the Panama Canal Zone Library, which was transferred to the Library of Congress in 1978. This collection contains various maps, plans, and diagrams detailing the history of Panama and the construction of the Panama Canal over the ten-year period of 1904 to 1914. According to a note on the map, the "map shows the land in the Canal Zone that has been set apart for all Governmental purposes in the Canal Zone, to date, and whether the land belongs to the United States of America, the Panama Railroad Company, or to private individuals. It further indicates whether these reservations for Governmental purposes have been made for Canal Works, Fortifications, Lighting, Town sites, Reservoirs, Watersheds, or Miscellaneous purposes ... ." Colored markings on the map further subdivide U.S. lands into those acquired by treaty, by purchase, or from the French. France had initiated work on a canal across the isthmus in 1879, but the project stalled. Panama gained independence from Colombia in 1903 and the United States acquired from Panama the rights to build a canal, as well as bought the assets of the defunct French canal construction company. This map formed part of submissions to the United States House of Representatives Committee on Interstate and Foreign Commerce by Frank Feuille, head of the Department of Law of the Isthmian Canal Commission, at Ancon in the Canal Zone on December 22, 1911, and January 26, 1912." u 1 Wealth By The Billions Tears Farm Products Worth 7 778000000 Washington December 14th After twelve years of service as head of the Department the Secretary of Agricul ture in his twelfth annual report to the President issued today renders a com prehensive account of his stewardship and presents a review of the progress of agriculture in the United States during this period Concerning the farm pro duction of 1908 he says that the farmer has created wealth by the billions Pro duction has been above the average of recent years with few exceptions and while some prices have fallen others have risen The farm value of all farm products ot 1908 reaches the most extraordinary total in the nations history7778000000 This is about four times the value of the products of the mines including mineral oils and precious metals The gain in value of farm products in 1908 over 1907 is 290000000 and would have been much larger had not the prices of cotton and hay been low Greatest of all crops is Indian corn whose production this year is 2543090000 bushels The value of this crop is 1015000000 It seems likely that the cotton crop is one

MRS BLAINE S LETTERS Edited by Her Daughter Mrs Harriet S Blaine Beal Mesgrs Duffield Co published last Saturday The Letters of Mrs James G Blaine edited by her daughter Mrs Harriet S Blaine Beal As excerpts from familiar letters that passed be tween the wife of one of the great his torical characters of America and her children and relatives and friends they have a peculiar and intimate charm For Mrs Blaine as this book proves was an excellent letter writer vivacious keen wilted and humorous She draws excel lent little vignettes of Mr Blames fa mous contemporaries his friends and his enemies She makes passing allusions to the great events of the day which are full of insight and acumen Unfortunately she and all her family were in Augusta dur ing Mr Blaines successful candidacy for the Republican nomination in 1884 and the unsuccessful campaign for the presidency that Vilowed Consequently this exciting period goes unchronicled There is very little about Benjaman Har rison that little only indicating that she did not like him The letters begin in 1871 when Blaine was at the height of his popularity as the Speaker of the House and end in 1899

Missouri Matters The Growth of Springfield Elections and OfficeSeeking The Agricultural Outlook Correspondence of The Journal Springfield Mo April 30 1910 The weather for the past winter and the spring to the present time has been de lightful The fall months are uniformly pleasant in this latitude The winter weather is often far from pleasant changing frequently from cool to warm with quite a percentage of cloudy and rainy days The spring weather is apt to be tedious warmer and cooler The past seasons however have been an ex ception The winter months set in dry and cool and so continued for an unusual ly long period Late in February the weather began to get warmer and up to the present writing we have had no seri ous or sudden changes All kinds of fruit trees have been full of blossoms which fortunately have not been subject to either freezing weather or cold rains so that at the present time the prospects for a large fruit crop are excellent Two or three weeks ago the blossoms on the trees presented a beautiful picture One of the most beautiful of the blossoms is the peach and one of the most fragrant
