MONTREAL AND QUEBEC Impressions of These Canadian Cities by an American Tourist Leaving Belfast on the 120 p m train Sept 27th we arrived in Portland at 635 and after a short stop there took a sleep er for Montreal over the White Mountain Division Well now a sleeper is all right but it proved to be a waker for me and I had a good chance to study the sky all night as I laid beside a window In the mean time others were sleeping 1 could tell this by a peculiar sound coming from some of the berths near me We were sidetracked at St Johnsbury Vt for a while waiting for the through train from Boston to Mont real We had been riding head towards the engine but after we were coupled on to the Boston train and started 1 said to my wife good Lord they are taking us to Moutreal feet first and so it was Well we were up and dressed early and had a good view of the country as we went speed ing along toward our destination We noticed that it was good farming land and very level for miles before we

WEDDING BELLS ClementChilds In the presence of immediate relatives Mary Adeline only daughter of Mrs Hiram Veazey Childs of East Hampdeu was mar ried to Irving Owen Clement of Seal Harbor Ale at the home of the bride on Bevin Hill at 6 p m Aov 14th Rev Hugh E Brown pastor of the Congre gational church of which the bride is a member performed the ceremony the Episcopal service being used the bride being given in marriage by her mother The v marriage took piace beneath a bower of hemlock smilax and yellow chrysanthemums in the drawing room to which the bridal party proceeded from the rooms above coming down through the hall which together with the other rooms below was prettily decorated with laurel ferns aud chrys anthemums the color scheme being yellow and green Professor aud Mrs R R Cone played the weddiug march from Lohengrin as the bridal party moved forward also playing during the evening The order was as follows Rev Hugh E Brown the groom ac companied by the best man his cousin John C Clement of Belfast Me ma tron of honor Mrs Edward C Childs of Manset Me sisterinlaw of the bride

third District Republicans Henominate Congressman Edwin C Bur leigh by Acclamatien Nomination Speeches Applauded Orlando E Prost of Belfast Stirs the Convention to Cheers The Republican convention of the 3d Maine Congressional district was held at City Hall Waterville April 29th and an enthusiastic and loyal gathering of workers from Kennebec Somerset Hancock and Waldo counties met there in force to enter upon the work of the 190 campaign The convention was marked by absolute harmony and its business was disposed of in business like fashion The convention was called to order at 11 a m by J W Black of Searsport chairman of the district com mittee and after prayer by Rev George Dana Saunders of Waterville the call for the convention as read by Hon W II Wildes of Skowhegan Hon Ellery Bowden of Winterport was elected tem porary chairman and after taking the chair made an able address in which among other things lie said The Republican party during most of the past half century lias enacted the laws which have shaped and mould ed the destinies of this country The periods since 1S61 when the Democratic party was in control were illustrious principally for laws which

Nearly Three Centuries Of Temperance Agitation and Legislation in Maine16361909 BY FRANK W GOWEN NO 5 At the Grand Lodge session of the Maine Good Templars in Bangor in the spring of 1875 Mr George E Brackett of Belfast was elected Grand Secretary and he served the Grand Lodge in this capacity something over thirty years and at the time he retired from this office two years ago was the oldest Grand Secretary in point of service in the world Bro Brackett was one of the ablest and most popular Grand Secre taries the order has ever had in Maine and his name is widely known and hon ored For many years he has published the Maine Temperance Record and in all his noble work for our order and the cause of temperance he has been ably assisted by his wife In 1881 Hon T R Simonton of Cam den was elected Grand Chief Templar and as he was an able speaker his ser vices were in much demand throughout the State in addressing public meetings in the interest of the order Then came Mr B C Torsey of Winthrop who made a very excellent officer He was also a

AN AUTO RIDE I To Boston and Back in a Packard Cr The writer recently enjoyedhere may be added all the superlatives to be found in the dictionarya trip to Boston and return in a Packard touring car The ride was one for pleasure and the rough places in the Maine roads of which there are many were gone over at low speed and at no time was the rate too rapid to prevent full enjoyment of the scen ery So parts of two days were taken each way to cover a distance that could easily have been made in one The route both going and com ing was through the towns and cities of Bel mont Searsmont Appleton Union Waldoboro Damariscotta Newcastle Wiscasset Bath Brunswick Freeport Yarmouth Portland Scarboro Saco Biddeford Kennebunk Wells York Kittery Portsmouth Newhuryport Lynn Cambridge and Boston I may have skipped a town or two but those named will indicate the route taken The start was made from Belfast at 7 a m on the coldest morning of the coldest day of the season The party were clad in winter clothing but fur coats would not have been amiss The wind was blowing a gale

A Prize Essay for Peace Day Wednesday Nov 27th was observed as Peace Day in all the Massachusetts High schools All the pupils in the Som erville High school were required to writeessays on the theme the best one in each class to be read before a school of 2500 pupils Miss Charlotte B Wads worth a junior wrote the following which was selected from 300 by the spe cial committee Miss Wadsworth is the daughter of Mr Edward A Wadsworth of Belfast and is living with her grand father George W Burkett while attend ing the Somerville High school Americas Part in the War Hundreds of years from now school children all over the civilized world will be carefully memorizing the date April 6 1917 that date which to all of us means and has meant so much We need not memorize it we have lived it It was very still in the great hall of Congress on that sixth of April 1917 Every available seat was filled The galleries were crowd ed the quiet was so intense it was al most visible as President Wilson read those momentous words declaring war on Germany Every possible effort had been
