Pickett tried to hold off the Union advance on Petersburg and the important South Side Railroad. Included are Hatcher's Run, the Appomattox River, Petersburg, Dinwiddie Court House, and the Weldon Railroad. Union forces involved included Warren's Fifth Corps infantry and Sheridan's cavalry.
