Page Six x J JBVMns Harry Pugh McClure WNU Service CHAPTER I Slap bang bumpteybump Kath leen Maguire smothered an eloquent Damn A rear tire had gone flat and was smacking the pavement with loose rubber It was no more than she expected The family se dan was on its last legs Nothing could do it any good except to jack it up and run a new one under it And a fat chance there is of that muttered Kathleen attempt ing to steady her wabbling vehicle But she had been hitting a smart pace and the pike was badly worn as full of holes as the sedans dilapi dated roof With a little wheeze and a groan the car slid off into the ditch to the right and coasted gently half up the other bank where it hung precariously poised on two wheels in the thick tangled under growth of blackberry vines and dog fennel She had been to the country for flowers Because they were cheaper than hothouse products On the front seat carefully balanced beside her to keep from damaging their tender tips was a bucket full of purple irises She had thought it a bril liant

A Constmctive Newspaper TWENTYNINTH YEAR BELKNAP HERD FIRST IN MILK PRODUCTION BOARDING SCHOOL DAIRY HERD RANKS HIGH IN INDIAN SER VICE IMPROVEMENT ASSOCIA TION COMPETING WITH 73 OTHER HERDS The herd of Holstein cows at Belknap Boarding School ranked first in the Indian Service Dairy Herd Improve ment Association for milk production last month There are 73 herds in this association located at various Indian Agencies schools and hospitals thru out the United States Belknap herd topped the list for Sep tember with an average production of 11044 pounds of milk per cow This average is based on the entire herd of 24 cows three of which were dry dur ing the month Myrtle a registered cow gave 2131 pounds of milk which is an aver age of over 71 pounds per day or nearly nine gallons Pauline another registered cow produced 1894 pounds during the month The herd has been closely enllcd the past year to eliminate the poor pro ducers By keeping accurate records of production and feed costs the un profitable cows were soon weeded out which resulted in fewer cows needed and less feed cost for the same amount of milk Many Montanans Expected To Register
