th Independent for within peer IU debts wen paid off and lu subscription lint wu materially Inenued from 450 to 1300 subscribers In Much 1871 Hush McQuald whose memory will ever be gree n among Montana Jouroallato ob tained a onefourth interest in the Independent For orer one year the Independent published in a Democratic county went hugry for county pat ronage while the aggressive New NorthWest raked in the profits accruing from the public printing In March 1874 the ofllce of the Rocky Moun tain Gazette at Helena was destroyed by fire An offer was made to remove the Independent from Deer Lodge to Helena which wu accepted and on March 71874 the last number of the Inde pendent was printed at Deer Lodge and the office was removed to Helena Addison Smith sold his Interest to Mr LaCrolx but was connected with the Independent in the capacity of collector und canvasser until the spring of 18H0 when he en gaged in the mercantile business at Deer Lodge at which place he now reposes in comfort and competency an honorary member of our Associ ation THE INDEPENDENT AT HELENA Messrs Kerley McQuuid LaCrolx com menced and continued the publication

Howard Hits Child Labor in News Code Continued from Page One the rights of the employes or their representatives Opposed the Code Originally The printing trades unions have enjoyed harmonious relations with the Daily Newspaper Publishers for more than 30 years In all that period there has been but few major con flicts When the NIRA was adopted an invitation was extended to the rep resentatives of the American News paper Publishers Association to enter into conferences for the purpose of formulating a code by mutual agree ment This invitation was not ac cepted and the spurious plea was made that to apply a code to the newspapers would interfere with the freedom of the press It was apparent the newspaper publishers intended to use their great influence to escape rules and regula tions which were to be applied to every other industry in the nation Exemption was to be secured if pos sible and if not exempted the attitude of the publishers was one of silent re sistance Insincere Support of NRA When the President endeavored to lift the country out of the depression by evolving the individual agreement plan through which employers could Safeway Stores MACMARR Price Effective
