THE WASHINGTON TBIES THURSDAY FEBRUAEY 9 1911 BEVERIDG E UPHOLDS RECIPROCITY TREATY Senator Pleads With His Colleagues to Enact the Measure Let is not forget that this Is not a local and patchwork afCalr but a broad national and humanitarian plan of statesmanship Generally speaking It affects favorably more than a hundred millions of people on this continent ninetenths of vhom are under our flas and substantially all of whom are of the same race with the same industrial methods the same cuftoms the same ideals In these words Senator Albert J Bev rige of Indiana todav appealed to the Senate to enact the Canadian reciprocity legislation which President Taft has put up to Congress Senator Beverldge took up many of the arguments against reciprocity anO angwered them He declared that if a few selfish Interests prevent even the beginning of this beneficent program it well may be that those shortsighted and selfish Interests will be made to suffer In stern reality Infinitely more than they vainly Imagine that this re ciprocal arrangement will make them suffer now Senator Beverldge recalled that our wisest statesmen including McKlnley were for reciprocity He urged that no local or selfish motives be allowed
