THE SUN MONDAY APRIL 5 1915 AN APPEAL TO THE AMERICAN PEOPLE CI Let us alleviate human suffering and preserve lifenot help to destroy it R Vf S a result of receiving hundred of thousands of letters cables and mes sages through various sources containing heartbroken appeals prayers JM and pleas from the people of our mother countries we the undersigned editors and publishers have concluded to place this appeal before the great American people on behalf of our readers The readers of our newspapers are vitally affected almost without ex ception by this disastrous conflict of the European nations Their brothers their sisters parents children or relatives live in the warring countries This does not mean that the American people as a whole is not vitally affected but our readers are more closely linked through the bonds of blood relationship with the peoples of countries now plunged in the depths of barbaric warfare Each days mail with its news of the pitiful progress of the war brings some pew and bitter anguish to the hearts of our people The pleas of the millions of widowed mothers the appeals of the father less children and orphans and the prayers of
