NewspaperPeople Affinity By Rosecoe Drummond More Americans are reading newspa pers more thoroughly than ever before There must be a reason Despite the decline in the total num ber of newspapers total newspaper cir culation in the United States today is at an alltime high There must be a reason The reason must have something to do with newspapersand people There is a special affinity between them between newspapers and people People must feel a great identity of interest with their own newspapers One of the reasons may well be that the printed word requires more of its read ers than any other media Readers get more out of newspapers because they put more of themselvesmore of their own thinkinginto their newspapers I do not speak disparagingly of other news media quite the opposite I think that radio and television reporting is a tremendous boon to our democracy Radio and television reporting greatly expands the surface of public know ledge In my judgement most newspapers greatly expand the depth of public know ledge Dictator Diem The latest clear act of dictatorship in South Vietnam where American boys are being asked to die fighting for the regime is the imposition of

Oct 5 Is Last Day for Acreage Reserve Signup Montana wheat growers were reminded this week that Friday October 5 is the last day they may sign agreements to partici pate in the 1957 Acreage Re serve program The reminder was offered by Leo S Kolstad State Agricul tural Stabilization and Conserva tion administrative officer as he pointed out that October 5 is the end of the twoweek extension made by USDA to give farmers more opportunity to learn about the program and sign agreements Farmers who will grow only spring wheat in 1957 or who have normally planted spring wheat will have an opportunity to sign agreements before spring plant ing time Any producer who has a regu lar wheat acreage allotment Is eligible to take part in the Acre age Reserve program Kolstad explains Payment will be earn ed by reducing the wheat acre age below the 1957 allotment in accordance with terms of the agreement The acreage reserv ed from wheat production may not be cropped or grazed during the period of the agreement which will be from the date of signing or January 1 1957 whichever is earlier through December 31 1957 Although agreements are calendar
