"This 1829 map of Pennsylvania is the earliest general map of the state to show railroads. Several of the first railroads in the United States were built in Pennsylvania, where they were used to haul coal from mines to rivers and canals. The map also shows roads, canals, and proposed railroads. Counties are distinguished by color, and the main mountain ridges are shown by hachures. The map is by Anthony Finley (circa 1790-1840), an American map publisher based in Philadelphia, at the time the center of cartographic publishing in America. Finley's maps were known for their focus on clarity and for presenting only the most important facts and features. Finley produced numerous individual maps and two atlases, A New American Atlas (1826) and the New General Atlas (1831)." World Digital Library. Shows roads, canals, railroads, and proposed railroads.
