A Prize Essay for Peace Day Wednesday Nov 27th was observed as Peace Day in all the Massachusetts High schools All the pupils in the Som erville High school were required to writeessays on the theme the best one in each class to be read before a school of 2500 pupils Miss Charlotte B Wads worth a junior wrote the following which was selected from 300 by the spe cial committee Miss Wadsworth is the daughter of Mr Edward A Wadsworth of Belfast and is living with her grand father George W Burkett while attend ing the Somerville High school Americas Part in the War Hundreds of years from now school children all over the civilized world will be carefully memorizing the date April 6 1917 that date which to all of us means and has meant so much We need not memorize it we have lived it It was very still in the great hall of Congress on that sixth of April 1917 Every available seat was filled The galleries were crowd ed the quiet was so intense it was al most visible as President Wilson read those momentous words declaring war on Germany Every possible effort had been

NO NEED TO WORRY Despite Croakers Human Race Is Not Deteriorating Facts Brought Out by the War Show That Men Today Are as Strong Physically and Morally as Ever in History The big avernge height of the men dratted into the United States army is being widely commented upon in the press and it appears that the facts Justify the favorable remarks being made observes the Montreal Gazette Records of the quartermasters office show that the Americans who are donning the army uniform today are bigger than the men who fought in former wars The size most in demand for the standard army shoe in the past was 7E while the average size of the marching shoe today is SV2 D and that of the field or trench shoe 9E Two styles are issued for it has been found by experiment that soldiers require a larger shoe for the trenches it being necessary to wear two pairs of socks at a time in cold and wet weather Similarly the presentday American soldier has to be provided with a size larger than his predecessor in coats shirts and breeches He is a bigger man all round which is decidedly sat isfactory
