VACATION ON CAPE COD Lo on a narrow neck of land Twixt two unbounded seas I stand Quaint Cape Cod Even its name has i ilavor of oddity about it which illus j dates the grim humor of the Pilgrim I delegation selecting it Fishing in its neighboring waters the party decided i it the first fish caught should give tie to the new found cape and up j on the bottom speedily whisked a jnodly codand Cape Cod was im irdiately christened into existence arcely more than live miles in width any part it extends out from the uinland or upward of sixty miles d curves inward sixty more its in land sliores washed by the waters of c of the most picturesque bays known the world while its outer coastline esents a harrier to the broad Atlantic lieli rolls in magnificent surfbeats eaiust it On the Atlantic side the n ation of which I write was spent It goes without saying that in choos ig the cape for a summer vacation ne is governed by a thorough love for ocean its changing moods its vast ess and 1 know of no better place on our coast to satisfy

WEATHER PREDICTIONS Hie Work of the C S Weather Bureau Bruttits to Commerce and Agriculture There is no other subject in which the people throughout the civilized world are so generally interested as they are in the weather and there its noth ing that exerts a greater influence on the affairs of men Although the weather has occupied mens minds to a great extent since the earliest days of the race and much scientific research has been made it is only within a com paratively few years that any systematic attempt has been made to record and diffuse meteorological data or knowl edge Since the work was taken up by the leading commercial nations of the world great advances have been made and great benefit has accrued particu larly to navigation and agriculture and allied branches The early Egyptians studied meteor ology as a branch of astronomy and Aristotle compiled a comprehensive work on the weather from their writ ings and his own observations He dis cussed prognostics of rain wind storms and fair weather but made no attempt to explain any of the phenomena Cicero Virgil and others wrote on the subject but they added little to the knowledge

JOURNALISM As a Profession for Young Men and Women A paper read at the Universalist Church Sunday evening March 31st by Charles A Pilsburv I am asked to address you tonight on Journalism as a profession for young men and women Should I accept the great preponderance of opinion on this subject it would only be necessary to say to those of either sex who think of taking up newspaper work what Punch said to those contemplating matrimony dont Men and women who speak from experience tell us that journalism is an arduous profession in which there are few prizes and that the qualities which command success in this line of work would bring greater fame or larger pecuniary reward in other professions or in trade This is perhaps true but journalism has its attractions and its rewards First as to the young woman m journalism I can look back to a time when there were no women employed in regular newspaper work There were women contributors but none who held positions as reporters staff correspond ents or editors Today there is not a newspaper in any of the large cities and this is no doubt true of the smaller
